Land Rover to test diesel SUVs in U.S. By Richard Truett Automotive News / May 30, 2003 DETROIT - Ford's Land Rover division will start testing four diesel-powered SUVs in the United States this fall. Two Range Rovers and two Freelanders will be put into Land Rover's test fleet, spokesman Bill Baker said. The vehicles will be used to demonstrate how well modern common-rail diesel engines perform compared with older, smoke-belching diesels, he said. Journalists, politicians and Ford employees are able to drive these test vehicles. The test does not mean Land Rover plans to offer diesels in U.S. models, Baker added. The Range Rover diesel delivers 22 mpg on the highway, compared with 14 mpg for the gasoline-powered model. The compact Freelander SUV with a diesel engine delivers nearly 30 mpg on the highway, Baker said, compared with about 20 mpg for the gasoline model. Diesels account for a large part of Land Rover's European sales, but none are offered in North America. | ||||

A lot of people are interested in Defender 110s and Diesels. If you scroll down the "For Sale" section in this board, a guy is importing 20 or so 2002 D110s with the 300tdi and having them DOT and EPA certified to legally register and drive them in the US. Seems to be legit. He's selling them for $43K or there abouts (right about even with a fully loaded 03 Disco). To me, if this is indeed legit, seems like a better deal than those people paying in upwards of $40-$50 grand to get a used '93 NAS D110. I would love to see this deal happen, even though I can't afford one at the moment. If they can make this first batch happen, I'm sure the next batches would go cheaper.  So Christopher, Christian, and Brad...go sign up for those first batch of 20.... Glenn | ||||

The post here in Discoweb disappeared (either it was archived or the powers that be saw something fishy). The guy goes under the name Beowolf or something like that. I remember when he posted that, I saw the same post at d-90.com, roversnorth.com, and various other LR websites. I did a quick search and I found one of the posts.... click here Glenn ps...
