I have to disagree. Wax your truck and make it look nice. Keep it tip top. Driving around a scratched up hunk of shit is nothing to be proud of. I have found that it's usually the wannabe's and morons who leave the mud on their trucks after a trail ride and drive around town with their jerrycans still on the roof rack and the body panels all scratched up and looking shitty. This is their idea of giving notice to the world that they're not poseurs. What a joke. Don't be afraid to scratch your truck and use it often, but take good care of your truck too. Use the wax.

I like a carnauba-based wax. It's substantial (for covering scratches) and smells good.

I use Meguires and a Craftsman orbital buffer.

I wax in December and May every year. If I know I am going on a trip into an area of heavy salt (Beach or snow), I'll perform a preventitive waxing to lessen the effects of the environment.

Damn John, wax your truck and make it look nice? Seems like everyone here always says that rovers like the mud. I've seen pics of Ho's truck on the EE site and it looked clean enough to eat off. And this for a hard-core trail rig. You guys got me all confused now. I dont know if I need to leave the mud on or wash it off and use wax.

Wax the rover, who'd a thunk it?!!

I use a synthetic product called Klasse. It is made up of two products: All-In-One (AIO) and Sealant Glaze (SG). In my opinion, the synthetic products tend to last longer against the elements. The carnuba waxes usually "look" better, but I'm more after the protection than looks.

I typically wax four or more times per year. If I am about to go on a trip, I'll perform a preventative waxing to help the bugs, dirt and scratches wash off easier.

I use Meguires cleaner wax. It goes on as hard as you want or need it, but allways comes off effortlessely. I don't know if it is as tough as the others but it sure is nice to work with

Any carnauba-based wax should do the job fine. 3M makes some great detailing products. You will really need a power buffer to get rid of bad scratches. No wax will fix them. If you wax it often the scratches should come out alot easier too. Also, like Eugene said it will make washing the truck alot easier.

I'm with John, wax your truck. I once spent a day and a half buffing scratches out of a trade in Disco. All the owner achieved was a look that showed he didn't give a shit about the truck. Why treat your truck like it's a POS K5 Blazer? I guess if thats the look your going for then great, keep that wax the hell away. Yes, you can eat off my rover most days.

No offense intended. Just my .02

Daniel, if you saw Ho's hunk of shit in person, the last thing you would want to do is eat off it.

Sorry I confused you. Just do as you've always done and leave the mud and scratches on your Rover. It'll give notice to onlookers that you're not a mall crawler.

Get LR touch-up paint. Rovers North has it for sure. If its really big you could use the spray stuff instead of the brush. I've never had to use the spray on a body panel though.

I used the LR color match spray once when I had my 88RRC. It was a good 10 foot job, if you know what I mean. I got it from the dealer for $12 or so.

I've always taken good mechanical care of my vehicles and I wash the body, undercarriage, etc., when necessary but never big on washing/waxing on a regular basis.

After two years of ownership, I finally broke down and did this:

I ordered the Griot's Garage Ultimate something or other kit - which has everything you need to take a hunk of shit looking Rover, and make it a nice looking hunk of shit Rover:-) Well, just kidding it really makes a difference in the appearance and I've found that over time vehicles really do sell quicker and for higher $$ if they've been waxed and detailed on a frequent basis. I've used all the popular washes, waxes, etc., and I can't say that one's better than the other but I really like the Griot's Garage products. The Speed Shine, and Paint Cleaning Clay will really your paint look great. The interior cleaners and window cleaners work extremely well, and the Best of Show wax is easy to apply and seems to hold up well.
As a company to do business with, I feel they are a lot like Expedition Exchange in that they stand behind what they sell, they don't sell crap, and you can call and talk to someone with a brain.

Finally, when you give your rover a good detailing, you come to appreciate the nicks and scratches (even if they don't come out) and the the way in which these vehicles are put together and just how tough and rugged they are.

FWIW...

Man Jack, I couldn't agree more about Griot's Garage. I love that place and the products they have. I don't have their ultimate detailing kit, but I use their Car Wash, Best Of Show Wax, and their Machine Polishes. I'm lazy so I mix some Best of Show in the Car Wash if I'm only going to wash the truck and not wax it. If I'm waxing, I just mix the Best Of Show and some Machine Polish in a third bottle and then use that to wax on and wax off. The wax combined with the abrasive cuts the scratches better without making their own scratches. I never try to remove the scratches completely as it's basically pointless if you intend to go wheeling again. I just clean up the truck enough that it doesn't look like a hunk of shit, and that's good enough for me.

John -
Thanks for the polish/wax tip, I'll give that a try. Also, you should give the Paint Cleaning Clay and Speed Shine a try - good stuff....super easy to use (much less effort than waxing, and they make a machine applicator) with outstanding results.

Yeah, I have both the Paint Cleaning Clay and the Speed Shine as well. I usually don't use the Speed Shine for claying. Whenever I do use the clay (not very often because I'm lazy), I just use the clay over a wet and clean car. It seems to work every bit as well as using the Speed Shine. I just wash as usual and while the paint is still wet, I rub the paint cleaning clay over the paint. If I need more lubrication I just hose down the car some more. I swear, I must use some kind of cleaning shortcut at every step. LOL.

When it comes down to waxing or wheeling.....I say go wheeling. And for me there is not much time to do both soo......

If you can wax and wheel, that is very good. Just make sure the waxing doesnt get in the way of the wheeling.

It's kind of like mowing the lawn. I like my lawn green but many times mowing takes second or third priority. Long and green is ok, short and green is good but burnt up and dead is bad.

Like some say..."a bad day of wheeling is better than a great day in the office"

It's all a matter of prospective

I'm a big fan of the Mother's brand of products. I use their glaze and carnuba wax religiously.

Their back to black product works well on the wheel arches.

Hey Greg,
Like Greg, there are several Jack's. I think you must have me confused w/ another one. And I know which one you are speaking of, but I don't know him. I don't know John either, other than his connection with EE. I will say though that I do agree with his opinions on firearms, knives, rover mods and finally shit vs quality:-)

ps - thanks for the wiring info, although now I don't need it, but that's another story.

Greg, I think you're thinking of Jack Quinlan, the guy who discovered how to lock the center diff on his Disco1 a few months ago, but who also wanted to do the Dusy in the snow. I don't think Jack Quinlan and I see eye to eye on anything. Jack likes bridging ladders; I say they're for poseur value and little else. Jack likes Underwater Kinetics; I like Pelican. Jack likes the Breitling Navitimer; I like the OMEGA Speedmaster. Jack likes the Beretta M9; I like the Heckler & Koch P7. Jack likes the Ruger Mini 14; I like the Heckler & Koch HK93. Jack likes the FAL; I like the G3. Jack likes Rambo-style survival knives with blood grooves and saw teeth; I like Benchmade AXIS folders. Jack likes ARB diffs; I like Tractech diffs. Jack likes BMW; I like Mercedes-Benz. On and on. Jack and I seem to have two distinctly different ways of looking at the world. One thing is for certain: one of us has tremendously bad taste. Whether that person is Jack or John depends on how one looks at the world.

Maybe I could wax the rover, and then get it muddy. I'll have the best off both worlds. The disco will be muddy, but between the clumps of mud will be clean waxed black aluminum.

Thanks discoweb!

LOL........... Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. Glad the trailer wiring diagram helped out Jack, and sorry for confusing you with another Jack.

I've finally gotten to use my trailer wiring a bit. I recently moved to Florida and bought a small boston whaler center console that has given my trailer wiring setup a work out two or three times now, and the walmart trailer wiring setup is working just fine.

Just to confuse everyone even more, my real name is John. "Jack" is a nickname for John eg JFK.

I use meguiar's cleaner wax.
I use the griot's catalog to order Facom tools though.

Remember to do your interior as much as the exterior. Once a truck gets really filthy on the inside, it's never coming back. That is if you care about that sort of thing, and I'm a little OCD so I do.

Wow, this is kind of eerie.

I almost ventured a guess that you were a snap-on guy.

To quote They Might Be Giants:

"My evil twin, bad weather friend
He always wants to start when I want to begin*
It scares me so, like I scare myself
With that book of Nostradamus up upon my shelf

Playing hangman 'til the morning light
Doing donuts on the neighbors lawn
Then sleep all through the day, get up and start again
I can hear some sirens somewhere but I don't know why

My evil twin runs home again
Search lights look for an alibi, but I'll be home by then

Here he comes again, my evil twin
My friends have seen him hiding underneath my skin

Who cut the arm off the voodoo doll
That resembles a Republican president from long ago
I'd hate to see you leave
'Cause I have grown so grateful for the
Blame you save me from

My twin
My twin
My twin

(My twin) I know he looks like me
(My twin) Hates work like me and walks like me
(My twin) He's even got a twin like me

My evil twin, bad weather friend
I know some day I'll meet him
But I don't know where or when"

wait wait, don't tell me.
John doesn't like TMBG.
I must be psychic.

did you ever see the seinfeld where George does "the exact opposite of Costanza"?

If I did the exact opposite of my instinct I'd be John Lee!

Art, how far are you from the LA area? Probably about as far as I am here in Portland. We should all drive down to EE and do this fight club thing. It's been a while since I been to LA.

So John, if we go there for fight club, will you sell us a set off your breaddough sliders? Do we get a discount for kicking your ass?

Beware of EE! Apparently John is a modern day Dr. Mesmer. I opened a beer and sat back to watch fight. The next thing I know Jack's eyes were glazed over and he was buying axles and a diff. Half way back to San Diego I noticed there was an Engel in the rear compartment. Don't look him directly in the eyes.
