Readers Digest version:
My RRC broke down on the way to the Jtree SCLR event so I had it towed to LR Rancho Mirage. Monday morning I received a call from Brad the service manager telling me the fuel pump needed replacing and there was a blown “relay”. The cost to get all this fixed up for me? $998.00
After trying to understand how on earth they could justify charging that much for replacing my fuel pump and no logical explanation from the LR service manager I picked the truck up myself and brought it back to San Diego.
The new fuel pump and necessary accessories came to $318 and it took me longer to pull the carpet up in the back of the Rover than it did to replace the pump. I then moved on to the blown “relay” which turned out to be the fuel pump 10amp fuse. All in all this entire process took me an hour and I’m a guy who has never done more than change the oil in a vehicle.
I’m all for capitalism and I understand everyone has to make a buck but what I still can’t get over is Rancho Mirage’s attempt to charge me $600 in labor for replacing a fuel pump. It’s pathetic and I think they are a disgrace to the Land Rover name.

Ah, I feel much better.

I agree that's bad but that shouldn't come as a surprise to any LR owner. My dealership wanted me to shell out $320 for ONE O2 sensor, plus another $100 for the one hour it takes to install. I had two O2 sensors to replace. You do the math.

At least they were only going to charge you $100 for an hours worth of labor...
Oh I forgot to mention, while trying to justify the total cost they told me the special "relay" was $75...

rancho shocks have sucked for years, it's no surprise a land rover dealership that shares the name would suck also :-)

Hmmm. Just had my truck out there on Thursday. They seemed to know what they were doing, but then, it was just routine service. Anaheim Hills is much worse, and has a much worse reputation. If you ever need work out here again, you might try http://www.inlandrovers.com/ (ex-Riverside master tech.)

Paul, you should report this to LRNA. It's unacceptable and is completely unprofessional.

Well if you guys ever need service in Santa Monica, Hornburg is top notch, Just make sure you ask for Gary Zuniga (no one else) and have Dave Lara work on your rig.

Hey Guys,
My regular mechanic down here in San Diego is not only a certified LR mechanic but he is honest and professional. When I called him to let him know I would be towing the Rover down to him he told me not to bother. Instead I went to his shop, he showed me step by step how to replace the fuel pump and sold me all the necessary part to do so. I only left my truck up at Rancho Mirage that Saturday because I didn’t want to hassle w/ getting it all the way back home. I figured (wrong) that the dealership wouldn’t rip me off too bad.
Any one in the San Diego area in need of a great LR mechanic should give Behr at Sport Utility Motors a call. 858.453.6234

Good thing we have independent garages like SUM & LR Unlimted etc…

I've had a lot of work done by him, and I have nothing but good things to say about Behr.

I'm glad to hear that's where you went, Paul.
