when i come to a stop my tach needle goes down to zero. as i puill away it takes about 30 seconds then the needle comes flying up to where it should be.

i think the belt is slipping or is the bearings in the pully shot or alternator shot? the belt looks glazed and 6 months ago it looked okay, but i guess winter can do that?

if it's just a loose belt i'll check to see if there is a tensioner, if the bearings on the alt are going i assume when i spin the alt by hand (belt off ) i would be able to feel it?

any advice would be helpful, i'll be digging in tonight.

aside from the needle i have no indication of the problem.

yer on the right track. the spin by hand thing and belt... i'm sure you know this, but check the connection for the tach on back also.

if it is failing, consider the ac delco swap.

Mine did the same thing. It was my alternator. Replaced it with a rebuilt for about 1/2 the cost of a new one. Has not given any trouble since (about 1 year now).

belt broke on me yesterday after it started sqealing like a banche. very easy to replace, 30 minutes later everything seems fine.

i'll keep an eye on it. i have a spare alternator if the need arises. the bearings felt fine though.

do alternators "free wheel" and then engage? if so then it could still be the alternator.

thanks

The alternators aren't supposed to freewheel. I had the same problem with a loose belt and the needle dropping. Tightened the belt and it's always responsive now. However, I might have a bad alt. as well, but a new tightened belt took care of the dead then bouncing needle.

My alternator just died on me this weekend while wheeling in Ocala. I am planning on doing a swap with a 95 Disco alternator. It puts out 100AMP and I have found them for around $200.00 with a lifetime warranty. Can anyone advise me on this before I buy it and start the work?
