I just purchased a 92 RR classic and I'm doing some research. I noticed that post 1988 they changed the transfer case from a LR gear driven manual case to a Borg Warner chain driven viscous case.

I'm looking for some good tech info on both. I realize all the responses will be..."Oh ya gotta have the gear driven box" :P But what I'm looking for are some real life people using both, especially the newer case. I'm not sure I really understand how the Borg Warner unit works.

Questions:

1. Can the Borg Warner unit still be fully locked or does it still have some slip?

2. How is it actuated?

3. How durable is it...are there any very common maintenance issues?

Anyhoo, I got the Borg Warner unit so I hope it holds up to good off road use. My classis is a daily driver but I'll also be using it for club events and fairly demanding trails.

Thanks for any help,

Chris

Borg Warner is a viscous coupling. it takes a slighht amount of slip to react. the older the unit gets the more slip it may need or it might decise to lock up perminently.

the disco, defender or early range rovers have the lt 230 manualy locking transfercase.

it is generally felt to be superiour because it will lock and unlock year after year without worry.

the only advantange in my mind to the BW unit is if you are being chased on the highway buy a crazy person and you need to ride off thru a feild to get away from the officer. in the lt230
you'd need to get down to 5mph to get that puppy locked.

also in the snow it works bettter than the LT230,

aside from that it does need manitenence every 100k or so. if you are rolling with bigger tires the BW tends to wear out early.

you should be fine with the BW until it dies. :-)

That brings up another good question. Is the is it possible to replace the BW unit with the LT 230 if my original case dies or I decide I like the 230 better?
