It has finally happened. I picked up my 70 Series IIa 88 last weekend, and trailered it from LA, California to Phoenix. I named it Brutus. Seems that a female name just doesnt quite fit the truck. I am pretty excited about it. Now I just need it to pass emissions, etc. Overall, the truck is in great shape. A few dings here and there, but nothing terrible on the outside. The distributor and ignition needs replacement, and the parts are on order, and should (hopefully) be here tomorrow. This truck is just AWFUL! It is noisy, hot, uncomfortable, primitive, difficult to drive....I LOVE IT!
If this is what the 'Land Rover Experience' is, it ain't pretty, but is sure is fun.

Congrats! Great looking truck, is that a broom stick holding up the hood? :-) I just bought a 70 MGB a few months ago (Broom stick under the hood) and I have found it refreshing to work on an older car compared to my 99D2. So much more simple compared to the complex Disco. It has four fuses compared to the disco's four computers! So far it's been rewarding, but tough on the wallet!

Good luck!

Yes, it is a broom stick..isnt that funny?

Working on it has been both fun and frustrating. I am not all that much of a whiz on engines, and I have a lot to learn. But that is part of the reason I bought the truck. To gain experience fixing engines and other components that I can acutally work on, as opposed to working on the engine in my D2....which is nearly impossible.

As far as my attitudes toward the trucks changing, I would expect as much. I have been cussing it since I have had it home. But I still love it.

Oh you know, that's a great looking truck! It looks like it's been updated with a modern LR radio? Looks identical to what my Disco has. Congrats to you on your new toy.

Karen :-)

Hey, KJ....been a while since I have seen you around. It doesnt even have a radio yet. If you mean the CB, it is a Uniden that the previous owner included with the truck.

Thanks for the compliments. I hope Brutus serves me well.

Hey John, how is the MGB going? I understand the wallet part. My "new head" has been upgraded to a full blown engine rebuild (cylinders were oval on 2 and 3, one cam lobe was almost worn through etc). Hopefully we'll be able to stay under the $4000 mark, but knowing how these things go, I'm not getting my hopes up. The up side of course is that under the bonnet will be neat and clean with a newly sand blasted block painted glossy black and a car that should be oil leak free. On a side note, you should see the 1960 Mini my mechanic just bought. Full restore with less than 25k on the odo. What a beautiful car.

Jess:

I have owned 4 Series LRs and loved every one of them! I think that you will find that they will change your attitude and life if you use it for transportation every once and a while. Life goes at a different pace in a Series. HAVE FUN!

Bryan, the B is going well. I've about got it mechanically, up to snuff. New re-cored radiator, rebuilt SU's, new exhaust. I've also taken this time to clean up the engine bay. I should get the interior kit sometime next week from Prestige auto trim in the UK. Once I bolt the seats down, I will try to get it inspected and back on the road. Just in time for Summer!

John-Post some pics when you get it all back together. Hopefully summer will get here to stay soon. In Michigan, it's been in the 60's most every day and cloudy or rainy most every day thus far. Come to think of it, the B should like that kind of weather. Make it feel likes it's back home across the pond.

R.B. Funny. I wish it could go that fast. I was crusing with it on the trailer at 70 all the way back from Cali. Like Todd said...Speeding tickets are all but impossible.

Jack:
I WISH!!!! Unfortunately, Arizona is 'one of those states' Dont get me started. I believe the cutoff line is 1968, so either way, I need to get it up to snuff, at least for the test. I can retune thereafter. I have already failed emissions once, but I have a bunch of great guys helping me out from the Arizona LRO club. We will get Brutus through.

Jess,

Do you have a residence you can use out of Maricopa or Pima county. If so, no emmissions.

Glenn...No...I do, I do!!!!

Stacey.

I have the possibility of getting a PO Box in Pinal county. Will that work? Or do I need a residence.

Phoenix IS in Maricopa County.

I see you live in Tucson, Stacey. You should get in contact with the AZLRO group. We are getting the club re-organized and on solid ground again. www.azlro.org A bunch of great guys from down in Tucson. I have wheeled with several of them.

Hope to see you around.

Jess,

I am pretty sure that you need a residence. I had a property in Payson, turned it into a rental, but still registered my truck there. A friend of mine always used his parents address up in Tuba City.

I do not own anything built by LR yet. My wife hinted that the FJ40 may have to be sold if I start teaching a Pima CC, (commute). If that is the case it is Disco/Defender time. :-)

Then azlro, Thanks

Stacey

KJ....that was only there to show that the temps going across the desert while pulling the Series got up to 118, according to my thermometer.

Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, and Jon...you aint foolin' anybody! I watched that thing climb the hill up to Big Bear in front of me. I felt bad...wanted to get out and push. :-)

Todd, you saying "cherish" or "perish"? Both truly apply in the case of Series ownership. Parish means something completely different.

Jess,
The fingers are quicker than the eye....you are correct I meant perish. Although, if Stacey is seriously considering selling his 40...maybe a priest could help get his mind right :-)

My mind is clear, now. I hope that was not a sign of weakness.

I will find some beater high fuel milage POS before I give in.

Deep down my wife knows, there is no way I would sell.

Bryan, It's not bad, I will have to take rubbing compound to it though. I do have a few bubbles on the fender seams, that I'm thinking about touching up. The seats are in the basement awaiting their leather skins. The seats too will have red piping.

John-I went to the shop to see mine on Wednesday. The engine is out of it at a machine shop getting re-bored. Hopefully it will be done sometime later this next week. Alum. head, higher compression pistons and rings, new valves, rods, bearings, re-manned cam (the old one a a lobe that was almost round), carbs rebuilt, new heater valve, thermostat, electrical block, some wiring and switches, sand blasted and painted. Just what I always wanted, $9000 invested in a car worth about $7000. Thankfully everything else on the car is new (brakes, water pump, interior, paint, stereo,a cool wood Motolita steering wheel, fans etc.) My wife ever see's the bill on this one and I may be single again living in the damn thing.

Bryan, It's gonna be nice. Isn't that why they say when you buy an old car, to buy one that someone else has already restored? You never get your money back unless you value topless driving days!

Way too true. Looking back when I purchased it though, most of the ones with everything rebuilt, repainted, redone and restored were in the $9000 range. At least I know this one is done right. And your correct, the value of driving around topless is, as MasterCard puts it, priceless.
