I saw it at the Home Depot last night, great looking stance and overall package. This one had running boards however. Was covered in a good bit of mud. Right before I left, the owner came out. I told him I had not seen one up close and he let me take a look. His was an automatic, and the locker switches looked a little flimsy. But at least it's a production vehicle with lockers! He said he had taken it wheeling several times and only got stuck once when only "one wheel was on the ground". I didn't ask how he had accomplished that! I complented him on his truck and left, he looked over and saw the Disco and commented, "Land Rover makes one of the nicest 4x4's too."

Aaaw, he was just trying to make you feel good. Nobody says, "Nicest" in a normal conversation!!

Ummmmmm.... Loooockers....

That reminds me, Land Rover Enthusiast did an article on the different lockers to buy. It looked like they did a pretty comprehensive test of the different possibilities, testing them on different terrain, etc. But I didn't get to read it. Anyone see what their conclusion was - I would be interested in getting a locker for my IIa some day.

that dood is EXTREME!

Seriously though, I have wheeled with Rubi's a bunch and I gotta say, Hats Off!

Those things are very capable and I envy the set up... Tcase & Diff Gears, Front n Rear Lockers and MT/R's on Dana 44's.

Enough to make a grown man cry like a girl. :P

One wheel on the touching ground is reasonable, but not in itself reason to be stuck with good lockers.

Well face the facts. One of those little Rubicons in stock form will make alot of you guys look like 4 year olds on a trail. Its a nice little truck and atleast Jeep had the nuts to lock them up!!! You cant bad mouth that... Well , you can if you are a moron..
Of course I still stick to knowing that my disco will do it further and do it longer but I cant deny that right out of the box that little Jeep is kicking a Discos ass in most situations..

These Disco vs. Jeep threads make no sense to me, they are two different vehicles meant for two different things. The Disco is a safari vehicle, meant to carry people and their gear almost anywhere. A Jeep is strictly a trail machine, and as such it will out wheel a Disco, but only because of the size difference. Of course a Samurai will out wheel a Jeep, and my Foreman with 589s will out wheel all of them. A Disco to a Jeep is apples to oranges.

Kyle said it best, "One of those little Rubicons....."

Key word is little. I saw one at UWH this year and the thing looked like a very capable vehicle. However, it is still little. Leg Room is optional and where do you haul your crap?

Dan I beg to differ with your Foreman and the 589's. Unless its got a locker a lift and a rejetted carb to help turn those tires.

They are hard for the Foreman to turn but it does it. Got a good deal on a set of rims and 27” 589s but when it’s time to replace them I’ll go with 26”. Use to do most of my riding in 3rd while occasionally dropping down into 2nd. Now any time I get into some difficult terrain its 1st gear only. Still its impressive where these atv’s can go, and I really don’t wheel like some of the people I come across on the trail. Of course most times I have my son on it so I do try to use a little common sense.

Dan, what's wrong with Jeep v LR debates? LR makes a small "trail machine", it's called a D-90. My Disco shares much of the same running gear. However, LR has decided not to let me have the opportunity to buy one. And what else concerns me is that while Jeep is ebracing it's heritage with the Rubicon, LR seems to be moving in the opposite direction.

John , I hate to tell you but right out of the box that little Rubicon is kicking a 90s ass too. The 90 is certainly a better vehicle for the long term but for pure "WOW factor" the jeep is going to come out on top. You lock the 90 up and then we are talking but that isnt the case right out of the box.

Kyle, Agreed! I just hope LR gets back into offroad vechicles here in the US. The complete imdependant suspension and elemination of frame, is going in the wrong direction. Hopefully, the Rubicon will wake them up!

Yeah but what are the sales figures for the Rubicons really like?? Does anyone know? I don't but I can't imagine they are very large given how few I am seeing. This combined with the amount of morons over here that feel they HAVE to buy an American vehicle to help fight Al Quada or whatever and I really have to wonder how much of a wake up call it will really be. Land Rover seems to be doing pretty good selling to the yuppie crowd and unfortunatly I think they will simply stick with the good thing. To bad though, I'd like to buy a new d110 someday....

I see them a lot around indy. They have like 10 in the lot right now. They would be pretty high, at least the dealer told me that

They can't keep them on the lot here in SoCal. Nearly every one I've seen on the street already has tires, lift, etc. even though still don't have CA license plates yet.

The question is how many will actually turn a tire offroad. I hope quite a few will.

Going back to the Foreman and other ATV's. Don't get too confused here guys. An ATV has a very short wheelbase which limits the degree of short climbs it can do. I have come across many shelf climbs in Moab and other areas that an ATV would have to be winched where even a stock Disco, Rubi, or whatever would simply drive right up. The short wheelbases and misbalanced weight distribution of the ATV can be quite a drawback in certain circumstances.

That Rub seems a nice little package. I saw one on the trail over the weekend. I think all a stock Rub needs is a good amount of lift to do most trails. The one we witnessed was high centered on a rock wall for a while. When they winched him out, he left a lot of metal shavings and scrapes on the rocks.

Have to give him credit though, with only 2600 miles on the ODO.

nice thing about Jeeps though, when you get high-centered and leave a buncha metal behind, its just belly pan.

yet another reason why i'm a little green.

that and, you can do most trails on 1 wheel. :P

Interesting that they chose 245/75 as their premium tire size.

I run 245s and 235/85s would only get me about a half an inch more of diff clearance but I always feel like I have inferior "little" tires.

One wheel on the ground, the truck high centered on the stupid running boards, three wheels in the air.

I bet you could somehow hang the thing up on both running boars and have all 4 wheels off the ground.

Then you would be doing the trail on no wheels.

LOL

In regards to Curtis N’s post rock climbing is one area where a Disco would have an advantage over the smaller vehicles. Looking over some of the pictures on this site makes that obvious. But most of the trails here in southern IN are old logging trails and strip mines, and the smaller 4x4’s have a big advantage.

I have a ’99 Sahara and a ’00 Disco and enjoy driving both of them. They both have their pluses and minuses but if push came to shove and one had to go it would be the Jeep. Theirs just something about a Rover, the uniqueness I guess. The looks you get driving it around and the comments. Why just the other day someone told me what a nice looking Toyota I had.

As for the Rubicon my brother-in-law has one, not much different from mine other than the lockers and tires. He said they aren’t selling too well around here and managed to get a good price on his because of that. As of this time I have yet to see one on the lot at our local dealer. Myself I think I’d pass and get the Sahara, then lift it and put manual hubs up front with a locker. I never did mind getting out and locking the hubs and don’t see the need for the front end to constantly be engaged. Unfortunately on a Jeep that’s an $800 bill so I’ll put that off for now.
