I went to the Pismo Beach dunes over Memorial Day weekend but couldn't take my own D1. Among the many Blazers (we had 3) and Fords, I only saw a couple of LRs and they were families that stuck to the main 'paths'. Does anyone have experience with Discos in the sand? How do they perform? It doesn't seem like they would fair well in the comp hill races that occurr non-stop...but I don't really care about that.

By the way, it took the only H2 around 10 tries to make it up the small comp hill in Pismo and then came in last in every race that it tried after that.

Discos are fine in the sand. I drive on the beaches here all the time in NC. No Problemo. I don't even drop the air pressure. However, if you are in an area alone, I recommend having one of those Pul-Pal things. I read a story about Ho using one of those to get unstuck. Perhaps he can share some info.

I see my fair share of sand driving here in FL. The D1's that I wheel with all do just fine. You have to air your tires down properly, but other than that, they seem to manage ok.

Take off the mud tires though!

It's more a case of having the proper tires (as in not mud tires) than anything I think.

Ho,
Thanks for the link to the pics. I heard so much sh** about Rovers that weekend that I was beginning to get an inferiority complex. How foolish of me. I can't wait to go back in a couple of weekends - this time with my D1.

I am in sand all the time here in SC. I have never been pulled out. My friends jeep does a little better than mine, but the LR isn't bad for the heavy weight that it is.

One time I was in the Outer Banks with 4 people and all of our gear for a 5 day vacation. Drove on the beach and was slowed to the point of losing all of my momentum. I managed to get it out by rocking back and forth and building it back up.
