I think the ECU may overheat without airflow. If you put it in a container you may want to think about that container having an integrated heatsink.

Well what I was trying to say was a heatsink, that you would integrate into the container. A heatsink is a piece of metal fashioned to allow heat to be moved away from an object and cooled by air. Most often used in computers but also the cases of many audio amplifiers are fashioned to act as a heatsink. If I had the extra money to do it right now, I would get a pelican or some other case that is water resistant. Cut a hole in it and affix a machined aluminum piece similar to this drawing http://www.materialtech.com/images/heatsink.JPG and seal that to the case in a fashion that it will touch the ecu so that heat can be transfered. Then cut a hole in the gasket for the container so that water intrusion around the wiring would have to move through a pressure sealed rubber area. Just an idea, now to find a way to market it :-)

Have a look at Timm Cooper's website: in the photo section he's got a shot of a pelican set up this way.

That Pelican case is a shot of MY truck. I decided I wanted a clean dry place for the fuse block on the Serious One. I didn't want the ugly thing in the cab, so I modified a small Pelican case to house the fuse block and run the wires out of the side. Did the same thing on the CrewCab.

BTW, the pictures of the 80 inch and the CrewCab are mine (my trucks).

FWIW, I'm not sure I'd want to insulate the ECU inside anything that was waterproof.

We're talking about heat related issues and ECU failure (potential) due to the lack of circulation and cooling under the seat where it is located in it's stock position.

If you are consistantly looking at water damage to your ECU you need to either relocate it, or change your driving style/habits.

Encasing it in plastic is (IMO) a bad idea. (think Han Solo encased in Carbonite...)

Can i cut the wires of the ecu to relocate it? and the splice them back together and relocate it were? I for some reason can not get myself to change my driving habits!

patrick if you are pretty hard core about doing this relocation, i should be able to remove the old wiring and harness from my parts car and you could make and extension for the ECU rather than butchering into the main harness (frieghtneing) i dont know if the added length will cause issues. theoretically it should not but these are range rovers and they are sassy about such things.

also you have a couple relays under the seat there that i recon' would be a pain to relocate, but they should not be too effected by water and are cheap to replace or carry spares of.

let me know if you are interested and start stripping the wire out. (sounds fun actually )

Damn, Rob has another good idea.

Actually, I can see a small-ish market for an extension cable for the ECU relocation. Think Painless Wiring, and you can see where I'm going...

Michael, you cant be serious!

down here in range rover land i try to give decent advice... hehe.

Gil , i took that picture in Budapest , Hungary about 5 years ago. I am no photographer but i try, that picture is probably my all time favorite i've ever take. i'd love to go back with a tripod and take a bunch more to try to get it clearer, though i sort of like the blured look.
prague is cool too., i have rolls of film from there,

prague.. budapest, its all the same :-) there is no mistaking eastern europe. its a cool pic though. i think the light in the top left sets it off a bit. i had a roll from budapest and kecskemet that got ruined in development, i was pretty bent.
