I'm looking for a 1999-2000 discovery II se7 for my wife to drive to semi replace her minivan now that the kids are getting bigger. I know that I need to get a warranty with it to cover the inevitable problems but what can I expect with these vehicles and what do I need to look for before buying? Interested in all experiences..Thanks for your time...

If you were really interested, you would have already read this board and known what you were getting into. Read on.

Paul is a confirmed member of "The Bitter Pill of Experience Club". It ccnsists of folks who bought a Disco II thinking/hoping it would be (relatively) trouble-free only to find it was put together on late Friday, right before the boys were ready to go out for a few more pints. And they'd already had a liquid lunch.
Others here have had better luck. The boys in Solihull were behaving themselves.

With the latest J.D. Powers quality rating out - putting LR one rank ahead of the worst on the list - Hummer, LR management is attempting to address the issue. Management requested no pens in shirt pockets (?) and no smoking on the production line. Poor dears.
They are, of course, meeting resistance from the line workers (union). The union is upset about the "Jaguarization" of Land Rover. Management has returned fire with - "The future production of Land Rovers at Solihull may be at risk.", i.e. you got a couple years to get it together or we'll build it somewhere else.
* Hey Ford - How 'bout a new plant in the U.S.? The biggest single market for 'em is here. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, MB, BMW can't be wrong.

I read every post on the board and was only looking for a few hints on what to look for when I go looking this week at several dealers. Most of the info I read was about the diso 1. Eric, I thank you for your help. Any other input would be great...

maintenance is the key for a long life in these vehicles. try to find one that has been well-maintained and has the records to prove it. Get it checked by a competant rover mechanic before buying. Read this board.

Good luck.

I am surprised there are not more folks stepping up to the plate. I asked all the same questions a couple of years ago and got better response than, "read the board"

Adam,

Here's a few things to check out when looking at a D2:

#1 While at the dealer, have them print out the maintenance records. Tell them that if you are buying the car, then you are buying the history. With the maintenance records in your hand, ask if there are any outstanding TSB's or other LR crap that is due or past due to be installed on your vehicle. If they will not do this, go somewhere else.

#2 Do a walk-around of the vehicle. Make a special note to check for:

a. Grooved brake rotors / old pads.

b. Check out the radiator from the bottom for ANY signs of fluid.

c. Check out the entire drive train from the bottom. D2's have a considerable amount of slop in the drivetrain. Pay special attention to the front drive shaft.

d. while under the vehicle, check out everything else for leaks. If you really want this vehicle, then have the dealer repair the leaks before you leave.

e. Inside the vehicle; check out all of those little plugs that hold the interior panels to the body. They like to fall out. Make sure they are intact and secure.

f. Inspect the areas underneath the DS and PS seats. You are looking for water and / or mud residue.

g. Lift up the mats and rub your hand along the floor. You will be feeling for water. If there is moisture present, you have an AC drain issue.

3. After inspecting the vehicle, fire it up with the hood open. Listen for any sounds (pulleys, ticking, and whatever else).

That's just a few I can think of this morning without coffee.

Here's a link with "things to look for in a Discovery II" http://www.robisonservice.com/servicedep/rover_advice1.asp
Maybe I'll be in a better mood when I finally get mine back on the road. 40 days and counting.

I have a 2000 D2 and love it! try to find one without the sunroofs already in ...... have them done aftermarket. I did and have 0 problems and they are covered under the vehicle warranty. It seems that a lot of the factory ones leak. Dont pay extra for the heated seats as all you have to do is buy a $30.00 part and snap in 2 connectors and you have heated seats drivers and passengers. save the 15 hundred they may want extra for this option. tires look for what type they have on there. The factory stock micheline something or others stink. They scallope bad you will want to change them in a hurry. I am sure someone here will remember the actual model of tires. I have the 7 passenger and it is perfect for what i need it for. good luck.

Adam,
We bought a 99 Dll in November of '01. I have been hooked on LR and off roading since. I STRONGLY recommend buying one that is still under warranty and that is eligible for LR's extended warranty. The existing warranty must have at least 1 month and 1000 miles remaining on it to be eligible for the full (as opposed to powertrain only) extended warranty. If you are unsure, contact a LR dealer with the VIN number and they will be able to tell you. And be sure to check everything Paul listed.
David
PS I bought mine sight unseen. That's another story.
