New fluid goes in the dipstick (at least on D1). The gasket is for the pan and the filter will be seen once the pan is off (only for sure on the D1). Also on the D1 you must remove the cat y-pipe and frame cross member to get the pan off.

The D2 does not have a transmision dipstick like the D1 does. That would be making things too easy! :-)
LOL

How do you measure/fill it then?

From what I understand, the DII has an enclosed unit with no way to check levels. I assume that after dropping pan and changing filter, there must be some type of pipe fitting, etc. that you fill on the side of the unit.

The shop manual for my '00 DII states that the procedure for changing the fluid is to drain it, via the drain hole, then drop the pan to change the filter. It is refilled by a fill/level hole, to which you pump fluid while it's running, and shifting through gears.

If you'd like me to post the whole procedure, I will.

It's time for the fluid change on my truck also (which is called for once in the vehicle's lifetime, at 60k miles) but I'm thinking about having a dealer/shop do it, just from the pain-in-the-ass factor.

Sorry, I was wrong, re-checking the maintenance schedule I got from my dealership, the transmission fluid filter should be replaced at 30k/2yrs, but at 60k, only the fluid needs to be changed.

Change this yourself. Dealer will eat your lunch for such a simple task. Changing the filter, little more time intensive but not a technical or mechanical challenge with the right tools.

Tam, if you have an email account, I can email you the info that you need. That is if you can open a word document.
