Every once in a great while the tach will just die for a minute or two & then jump back to life. This has been happening maybe every other day when the weather/truck is hot. Don't you guys think that the damn alternator would have just died by now?? The truck is running fine & starting right up. Should I check the contacts behind the unit?? Any suggestions??

Joe

Mine was doing this. I cleaned the contacts on the alternator and it works fine now. My plug was pretty dirty.

What year Disco?? I had this problem on my '95 Rangie(classic LWB) - it was wreaking havoc with the air suspension, too. Turned out to be a bad phase tap resistor on the back of the alternator. This is a little black piece that your white/black(grey?) wire plugs into. Looks almost like a little spade-to-post adapter, but it's actually a resistor in there. Pull the piece off and measure the resistance. I think it's supposed to be 82 ohms and I simply replaced mine with the correct resistor and made it somewhat rigid and temperature protected because of its location.

Jason.

My tach was tweaking around and it turned out that the lead at the back of the alternator was a little crispy. Cut and crimped a new shoe on it and all is fine.
I think you're right, if it was the alternator it would have died by now.

Make sure you have good contact with the LITTLE wire coming off the back of the alternator. Clean and Re-crimp or whatever.

That fixed mine

My 95 has a new (Bosch rebuilt) alternator and the other day out of nowhere the tach needle started getting twitchey. Would get more erratic with higher rpm.

I'll try the connection but it better not be that damn alternator.
