Hi everyone, I've been looking for a LR board since I purchased her and finally found one but it may be too late.....:-(.

Okay so this is the story, I purchased her at auction with 134K on her about 4 months ago with the intention of replacing my LX450 with somthing newer and with more luxury, other that that the trucks are almost identical in capabilities.

At the auction the idle was very high and rough and it made a loud whining noise under full throttle but we couldn't pass up the deal and it seemed like it just needed a tune up.

So 4 months passed and I got to 139k on it, I loved the truck except for the idle problem that I didn't have checked out because I was very busy with school and work. Plus the car was running fine besides it, no problems.

So I'm driving home one night and the RPM's start jumping up and down and stopped at an exit and parked it at a gas station. It would start but it would stall out because it wasn't getting gas. Also it was making loud noises when attempted to be started, I also noticed it was out of coolant which I had refilled a couple weeks ago.

So it was towed to my cousins shop with the thought that maybe it was just the fuel pump or maybe needed some regular maintenance. Well my cousin reported to me that the engine is GONE and beyond repair, he said it was just it's time to go. I have yet to ask any details, I will get them today most likely....

Okay so here I am, I can't afford the 3k for a new RR engine and double that for labor but I don't want to give up the car. It is in completely perfect condition besides the drivetrain now. I paid 10k for it and really really don't want to take a huge loss and sell it to a junk yard.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no idea what to do.

you need someone with know how to rip into the engine and find out exactly what the problem is.

can anything be salvaged? i think you need to surf around and find a used engine cheap and toss it in there.

loss of coolant on a 4.6 is possibly a cracked block - common problem on the 4.6's.

You could always replace with a 4.0 short block for about $1200 if cash is tight. Lose a little HP, but it would still be fine.

My .02

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Like I said I don't want to lose the vehicle, I really do like it a lot more than my LX450.

I still have yet to find out exactly what is wrong with it, I will soon.

Do you guys have any places you could recommend for engines? That 4.0 block, is that 1200 from Land Rover themselves? How much is it for a 4.6 block?

Thanks fellas

try car-parts.com, you will find some engines on there, most places will sell a warranty with the motor. It will be alot easier to replace with the same type motor due to the ecu and etc.

Hmm, 4.6 blow-ups common? What causes this? True for all years?

Thanks again for the replies...

So you guys are telling me that Bill's idea with the 4.0 block will not work? For 1200 I can definitely afford that and even send it back to the auction and make my money back.

But I need some help fellas, I can't find an engine under 3500 and I can't find any blocks at all. I need to know if that 4.0 block will mount right up and a contact to get it at that price would be good too.

I'm kinda in the dark here, if it was a Lexus or Toyota I'd know exactly where I'm at but here I don't......

Thanks again fellas....

fFrancis - contact Ron Brown on this board - his email is in hios profile - he sells new LR 4.0 shortblocks for about $1200.00 shipped. Then all you need is head work done (<$400 easy) and removal and install work.

4.0 is same - no problems with install

Thanks for the replies everyone....

Okay so from what I've gathered the coolant empty leading to a cracked block is a common problem with the Lucas 4.6L's(please sombody correct me if i'm wrong). My mechanic isn't very expierenced with RR's and he told me my engine is straight up gone so we were going to take it to an auction where they don't start the cars up, but like I said I really don't want to give the vehicle up.

If anyone can or knows of a place where I can get some more information and read up on this problem inparticular I would appreciate. It would be really nice if I knew what I was looking at financial wise before I give up on this amazing truck...

Thanks again,
Francis

Francis - not sure what else you want to know -

pretty straightforward per the above:

4.0 shortblock - $1200
head work (reuse existing heads) $400 (max)
+ whatever your mechanic charges to pull motor, R&R heads, reinstall motor....

done.

Thanks again everyone...

I'm sorry it took me so long to put up another post but I've been busy working on a deal for another business.

It turns out the piston rack needs to be replavced...

She's going to the auction next week in the hope that we wont take too much of a loss on it because it's going to cost more to fix than it's worth.

Thanks again,
Francis

Piston rack???? Huh.....

Seems like a new engine at a total investment of $2000 or so is pretty cheap, but it's your truck

Good luck

Well would a new 4.0 block alleviate the problem entirely? I still want the truck but my father wants to try our luck at the auction...

Besides, installation would probably cost as much as the parts if not more....

Sorry for all the wasted bandwith....

We decided against taking it to the auction because we did not want to sell sombody a Range Rover with a blown engine. With them thinking it was just a stolen car or somthing to that effect, we decided against it.

I am going to post it in the for sale section. A few people were ineterested, if you still are please reply again at [email protected] with an offer.

Thank you,
Francis
