Is it possible to pry the CDL Lever loose from the bottom side (i.e. from under my Disco)? Mine is stuck, shifts from hi/low no problem. Does not shift into CDL. Had a Land rover Mechanic tell me to just spray the shifter from the bottom with some penetrating oil, then use a pry bar to break it loose.

Any thoughts?

I just sprayed mine with penetrating oil over a few days and kept working the handle, It came loose then I put some spray lithium grease to keep it free. Charles

It's important to use the locking diff and low range every once in a while, otherwise they do have a nasty habit of seizing up.

Stupid question of the day.

I have the same problem. Do I have to remove the console and gaiter and spray it down from above or can I do this from underneath the vehicle like Joey mentioned (and if so, anybody got a pic of what am I looking for, reaching for underneath)?

Obviously, I'll take the easy road if it will do the job.

Hi Guys
For this to work you really need to go down through the console.
The reason this happens is through lack of use.
There is a rod that travels left/right, pushing the CDL, this rod exits on the left and is exposed to all the crap that flies around underneath, it will be near impossible to free up a siezed shaft from underneath.
The ones I`ve done have all needed a big hammer to free them up. This is not a difficult job, just take your time and be methodical.
You will need to drill out the rivets, and replace the rubber gasket the same way, but the rest is just nuts and bolts.
When you remove the window switch panel, the exposed plastic is very sharp and will slice you hand.
You will need to disconnect your handbrake so put a chock under your wheels.
Get back to me if you need more help.

Hey Pete.

I know this sounds really dumb, but how do you remove the console? I'm getting ready to install a cdl level in my rig (99 Disco II) and I'm wondering how hard the whole job will be. Thanks.

Just keep in mind people that if you don't use your CDL very often (like less than 4x a month) you need to shift it in and drive it a little. Especially in wetter climates like the Pac NW rust will easily build up and will seize the CDL. I use mine once a week on my 96 just in my driveway that way when I need it I know it will work.

Just FYI... not trying to nag... :-)

Hi John
First off chock the wheels.
remove both gearknobs and gaiters, 5 spd these twist off, auto box is a bit of a bear by all accounts, this need to be pulled off with great force.
remove top panel of window switches, this just levers off, exposing 4 small screws that remove main section, remove and label all plugs.
Pull gaiter forward on hand brake and remove clip holding clevis pin in place, remove pin (we did chock vehicle), pull upright without running off end of ratchet.
remove four screws on console 2 in front 2 in cubby box.
Console should now lift off with a bit of wiggling.
remove front console bracket, and both heater ducts.
remove all sponge insulation.
Drill out all rivets and unscrew any rings around gearstick.
Carefully prise rubber diaphragm away from tunnel.
All will now be revealed.
The CDL has a cover on it undo 4 bolts and look inside, see if rod moves to the left, if not undo further four bolts and the small bolt holding to the CDL actuation arm. remove to vice and work the rod free, I tap with a hammer until it starts moving applying loads of penetrating oil.
fill with lots of grease, and rebuild.
Should take roughly 2/3 hours all in.
Best of luck

I have run into this problem as well, fortunately, not in MY vehicle.

Once you get it freed up, fill the void in the top of the shifter with grease to keep the water out and the parts well lubed.
