My engine died on me a few days ago, I had it towed to the dealer and my worst fears were confirmed, I need a new engine. So I need suggestions and input on where to get a new engine, and or should I get a rebuilt one, pro's con's?

Talk to Nathan at www.xks.com. He asked if I wanted to buy an engine the other day for $2k. It's from a 1998 Disco.

When you say your engine "died", what exactly is wrong with it? Just because it suddenly stops doesn't mean you have to buy a new motor. The dealers will try to sell you anything they can get away with.
Some more info please!

Okay, More info. Here it is:
I was driving down the interstate, the truck had been doing fine all weekend. Suddenly without warning (meaning no temperature light or other warning light) I hear a pop. The truck cut off, I lost all power, and smoke was pouring out of my engine and I looked behind me and I had a nice thick trail of white smoke. So I pull over and pop the hood. I'm thinking it overheated and I blew a gasket. Well the first thing I checked was the coolant, and it was empty. So I call a tow truck and as he was putting it on the lift oil came flooding out of the bottom. I knew that wasn't good. So I had it towed to the dealership in that town (normaly I don't take it to the dealer, but I was about 160 miles from home). The dealer said I had a crack in the engine block which caused my coolant to leak. Thats my delima, let me know what you think Roland.

Stephen

The question is what caused the crack in the block?
What year and type of vehicle? What engine?

2K for an engine is tough to beat. Esp. if its a decent one.

96 Disco. 3.9 liter V8. I would like to know myself what caused the crack. I may have thrown a rod.

Yeah, get that engine from Nathan. I have seen it personally and it has EVERYTHING.

I trust the guy too, have met him a couple of times. Seems pretty nice, for a brit. ;)

The $1200 block is the newer version, something about different cam sensor the block for a 96 costs around $2200 but the newer block can be adapted if you are handy, not sure of the process.I am familiar with this because I just went thru this about a month ago thank God for warranties . Dealer did the work and I asked for the old block they said no then I insisted got the block and it looks to be in good shape no spun bearings like they said. HMMMMM....

Before you stick a used 4.0 in there you might consider a 4.6. It's a big improvement over the 4.0 but you'll need to have your ECU reprogrammed so it won't run too lean. If your heads are still good, you can use them on the 4.6.

Sorry to hear about your problem but as you already know you have a "cooked motor" due to no coolant. It's probably not a bad to fit a "low water level" alarm as an additional warning system to the stupid dash light. You can fit one to your overflow bowl. Some of the early model Range Rovers had them fitted into the screw on cap. I've had one fitted to my discovery and its comforting to know that its there.
