The original guide rails have plastic rollers. They chip easily and I noticed that they are using hard rubber now as replacements.

Mark, the rails on the sunroofs go bad and need to be replaced, I doubt lubricating it will solve anything. It seems that Land Rover knows it's a jakey design so they've (somewhat) suplemented the price of the rail kits (about $70 at the dealer - really not all that bad).
I just did the work on my '94 and, although pretty involved, it's really not all that hard and I saved myself from handing the dealer $400.
It's scary when step 1 is "remove headliner" but if you want to brave it, let me know. I took some photos and have been trying to post the 'how to' in the tech section but haven't gotten around to it yet (new baby in the house).

Oh, and in the meantime, if it'll close, then close it and leave it alone - pull the fuse if you have to. Otherwise, it'll quit working completely in the open position and you'll wind up becoming an expert in sunroof replacement (like me).

If the motor is turning and the glass isn't going up or down, and it's not locking down then there's not much you can do except replace the rails.
If your motor's not turning then you can insert an allen wrench into the drive and manually open or close/lock the sunroof (this only will work if the rails aren't toast). Pop out the plastic plug in the middle of the overhead map pocket to reveal drive/allen fitting.
But I'm pretty sure it's your rails.
Sunroof motor:strong
Sunroof rails:weak
