Well, I am almost finished re-fabricating my new 2003 Range Rover 120AMP Alternator into my Classic but I am having trouble removing the lower mounting brack from the engine. Can anyone give me some pointers?

If anyone else is interested in hooking up their Classic with a 120AMP Alternator just let me know...

Jason,

Just put in a Wrangler NW 130-150 amp alt (it's a Ford BTW).

Bracket came with it, bolted right in. No funny business.

How much is that Range Rover alternator going to cost you when it goes bad?

Not to bg on you, but there are easier/better ways that have been done in the past with great success.

But...I have to admire the ingenuity for thinking outside the box. Let us know how it turns out.

BTW, the alternator bracket is a PITA to remove. You are looking at also removing the PS pump bracket too.

While you're in there you should take your PS hoses and have them rebuilt, and other various and sundry things that are easy to get to (like ICM, cap, plugs, rotor, etc...).

hehe.

:flipoff2:

:-)

Go here:

www.wranglernw.com

The company is run out of Portland, in fact their warehouse was just a few blocks from my old house in No. Po.

The guys are totally cool, they'll answer questions, etc...that most wouldn't.

Be sure to get their catalog *before* you order. The website is...well...ok, but the catalog is better. The best is to get there yourself and wander up and down the rows of stuff. You see things you didn't even know existed and think 'hey, I know just where to use that!'.

Anyway, the alternator is a rebuilt Ford that they re-wind and put super special extra sexy juice into that makes it stronger? Heck I don't know jack shiat about alternators, just that they're supposed to pump out power. Oh, and that if the belt breaks your tach goes dead.

Check out the site, tell them I sent you (it might be good for 5 bucks off, but no promises).

Why not use a Mean Green instead of bothering with fab'ing mounts etc?

Just go this route:

http://www.premierpowerwelder.com/specs/PP185.html

Then you can weld up your own mounts, well, not until after you've installed it, then I guess you'd already have the mounts, ahh forget it, who needs 185 amps anyway :-) (I do)

Because I know the guys down the street, they gave me wholesale pricing, and the bracket was already fabbed. Only tools I had to touch were some wrenches and some wirestrippers/crimpers and it was installed.

Oh, and if it burns up on me in the middle of no-where's-ville, any NAPA will have a Ford alternator.

With the other two you're still stuck with LR stuff.

The PPW alt. is a sweet setup though.

If you get a Delta CS130 alternator then you can use the existing bottom bracket. You'll need to have a longer top bracket. I just replaced mine wth a Autozone p/n 1382-6-3 96 amp alternator for $80 (1 yr warrantee). I didn't have the time to order one with 105 amp for $120 but that's the one I'd recommend. The output seems small but with a winch and a Red Optima I haven't had any issues with this setup. Don't forget to get the same diameter, I mean exact, pulley for more accurate tach.
