So i just got my first disco its a 2002. I love it except for the stereo! I have the standard non hk stereo, and its horrible! What are my options for an upgrade? I want to keep the deck stock if at all possible. Can i upgrade the factory amp and speakes and leave the deck alone? Or is it all or nothing?

The factory speakers are better than you think. Get a new head unit with Satilite ready feature, Sirius or XM, and add a sub with amp.
200 for the head unit
200 for a bazooka tube or something
you can add Satilite later

I agree with leaving the head unit stock. Less chance for some punk wanting to break in and you keep the nifty controls next to the instrument cluster.

yeah you can install amps using the wiring from the stock Head Unit.. just make sure whatever amp you buy has the option for it... most do...
what you'd probably end up doing is splicing the wires for the output of the head unit into the wiring harness for the amp and then splicing the wires to the speakers on the amp.. if the stock HU has RCA's on the back, all the better no need to splice the speaker wires into the amp. I wouldnt know.. mine came with a non-stock kenwood HU in it already.. but that got thrown out as soon as I bought it..

stock units aren't any good. <--- period

If you put an aftermarket unit in (preferrably Alpine), it would make more of a difference than for you to just change out your speakers. Yes if you put a bigger amp on the small subs in the back it will give more bass, but won't sound as good as with a new unit.

If your HU is anything like my 97 unit was you are just wasting your time leaving the stock head unit. They suck and sound like crap compared to the aftermarket units you can buy. For a stock system it is not bad, but if you are wanting to upgrade get rid if the LR radio and LR amps.

I replaced my headunit with an Alpine, and put 2 Alpine 10" subs in the back, as well as a pair of Boston Accoustics speakers in the rear pillars in my disco...it sounds really good now. The head unit made the biggest difference though. Replace the head unit and you should be pretty happy.

Hello. I just recently purchased a 96 Disco and had a question about the subwoofers in the rear door. Mine do not work. I suspect when the previous owner replaced the stock HU with the Pioneer that is currently in it, he failed to hook something back up? Can the subs be run with an aftermarket HU in? If so, what do I need to do?

They cannot. You need another amp.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to car audio so bare with me...So, the amp that is attached to the sub housing will not work off another HU? Do I bypass this amp altogether then? I am going to replace the Pioneer with another unit. Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of an Alpine CDA-9805, which has preamp outs for the front, rear and sub. If I ran an amp off the sub-out, would I then run it straight to the subs in the rear? Again, sorry if these questions seem redundant and I really do appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks-
Matt

James,
You can use your factory head unit. You need a line level adapter. If you buy a quality one it will have adjustable voltage output which will clean up your signal. The line level adapter will give you the option of continuing to use your factory mids/tweets and add an amp for bass.

JVC head unit, Rockford Fosgate punch DVC 15" sub with 1400w amp and stinger 6-ga wires--all she lacks is new speakers in the doors. Lose the factory head unit.

I love it---it's like no other sub I've heard (especially with 1400 watts on it). The DVC stands for dual voice coils, so it has a better range than most. The coils are allowed to hit independently of one another, and it's amazing--definitely turned some heads in town. It's a little bit larger than I'd like (in the box)--it takes up about 1/3 of my cargo space in the back. I guess that's why I have a roof rack...

UM im packing a 12" audiobahn flame Q in a virtual Box with a power acoustic 820watt amp 7.2 inch tv, dvd player. Kenwood kvc-619 plays mp3s and changes 65 different colors. but my friends has 9000 bucks in his system and its amazing, its a probe that is dynomated and he is constantly using glue to glue the gt pannel back in every time he turns it up. It literally sounds like as if someone is taking a sledghammer to the plastic molding pieces inhis trunk. ahah but im happy with mine.But from experience guys its all about the box it can make or break your sub stay away from circuit city for boxs.VT is the way to go it will make a world of difference.

Hey Zack, you should try JL Audio XR400cx's in your doors. These are the only speakers that I have replace so far and they sound fantastic!! JL also makes dual voice coil subs, haven't heard them yet but plan on checking them out this weekend. What amp are you using for your fronts?

Hey James,
If you do change the factory HU out, how much do you want for it ? The 2002 stereo HU are better than the factory units in a 98 Disco1. The 99's were the best for factory.
I've been looking for a new system, but I did not like what I saw on the market. I like to keep it simple and everything aftermarket has got more than I need. The guys at the sound shop told me everything on the market is driven by the teen and 20 age group.
If you change it out and sell it, keep me in mind.

alright, so ive decided that im going to go ahead and change out the deck for an aftermarket, probably an eclipse, but ive read that it is a pain to do... ive also read that you can use a vw harness which makes life alot easier? Anyone know the exact harness you need? I just got rid of a 2001 vw and i have an extra harness lying around.. would it work? Also, does anyone know that part number to fill in that little gap below the stereo, when you put in an aftermarket one? Also, one last question, since i dont have the hk system, when i put in the new deck will all of my speakers work? Can I just wire into the factory amp.. or do i need to go around it? With my vw you could just wire into the factory amp using the speaker outs on the deck. Is this the same case for the disco? Any help would be appreciated!

Forget the wireing harness. Hardwire the new radio in. In the passenger side kick panel is the stock amp for the smaller speakers. Use these wires there to hook up your speakers.
1
LF= Blk/bwn- & blk/white+
RF= BLK/red- & blk/pink+
LR= blk/orange- & blk/yellow+
RR= blk/blue- & blk/green+

the tweeters are in line with the front door speakers. Use a voltage meter to check for the hot, ground, and aux wires behind the factory unit. Your rear door subs are not going to work. Do Not plug the amp wireing harness back in to the amp. Pull the fuse and keep it as a spare.

Good Luck..

I hardwired mine also. The aftermarket unit was putting out power, though, and I was adding a 1400-watt amp, so I had to cut out the factory amp altogether (literally). Good luck...

i ended up picking up an eclipse deck.. but im having some difficulty putting it in... i cant get the factory one out.. ive tried using a set of kenwood deck keys that i have from my old car, which happen to fit in the slot perfectly, but the deck wont budge. Any other way to get that thing out of there? Also, once i get it out, can i go ahead and wire directly into the amp, or do i need to re wire, and go around it directly to the doors?

Just a suggestion, why not get on eBay and see if you can find an original HK head unit? Or check with some salvage yards? Just a thought.

James,

Which Eclipse deck did you get? I was looking at one of the 5422 (I think) decks versus the Alpine 9815. Both seemed cool to me, bit the alpine can play my mp3s. Why did you go with the Alpine?

If you tell me you got the 8xxx with the copper chassis, im gonna tell you, you suck! :-)

Plans have changed a bit, I found someone who will sell me the entire hk system minus the subs.. How hard is this gonna be to install? Is it just goin to be swapping stuff out, or is it going to be re-wiring everything? Oh, I ended up gettin the eclipse 5423, its a really nice deck, the reason i got it is because it has very simple operation, and the build quality is great, but sadly i will be returning it.
