I just bought a '94 Disco I, manual, totally stock, with ONLY 52k miles from a friend for $5,500. It has been serviced by an independent Rover mechanic in LA for the life of the truck. Needless to say, the guy did me a big favor. Aside from the typical list of minor repairs and some paint oxidization, this thing is in great shape.

Q: I plan to use the car for commuting and amateur off roading at a ratio of, say, 10:1. With my "other" $5k that I saved, should I invest in some trail conversion gear (If so, what are the basics), or should the money go untouched for the expected future repairs?

I.e., what, on average, will the mechanic/parts run annually for 12k with some off-roading mixed in?

geeze.

is it leaking anything?

depending on the luck of the draw it could blow up tomorrow or last ten more years with no issues.

all you can to is be anal about preventative maintenence and don't let any issue go un questioned or it will bite you in the ass.

figure $500-1000 a year on maintence.

Geeze Rob, don't put the fear of God into the poor guy. He just got the truck, give him some time and then tell him that... :-)

A 94 with 52K, that seems a bit low to me, what did the previous owner use it for, decoration? Adam, the $500 figure is about right unless something really bad happens to the truck, I spend about $600 in 2002 and I am around $400 in the hole so far this year!

Just take off the air dam, buy some mudders and steel rims. If you 4x4 hard you are going to break alot more stuff than a soccer mom will.

Front end receiver, Receiver shackle bracket, 3/4 shackles, 20,000lb strap
Replace tires for BFG AT or Dunlop RT
Basic good start..if you want to spend more, OME lift would be good.
Watch out for those rubber hoses they are old and liable to fail

Of the vendor sites listed under Disco Web's "Resources" link, can anyone suggest which is best for the above-mentioned products?

OME lift, Shackles, and strap go with expedition exchange. For the shackle bracket go with Tractor supply, and tires go with Discount tire.

And I would say get Jate rings for the front unless you get a new front bumper. The front hooks are not the best anchors to pull out. Also look at getting some diff gaurds. I got mine from Atlantic british and they are great. Look in the for sale sections, there are often for sale there.
