I was wondering when o2 sensors are disconected what happens, does it go to full rich or lean? and my disco has gray and red plugs for the sensors, what ones go to what side? When I changed the y pipe I did not remember what color went to what side, and does it make a difference. Last question, is it true when replacing 02 sensors, all you need to change are the front two? I heard the rear two are just to trip the check engine light? Can anyone help with these questions...By the way its a 1996 discovery |

Chris, A few weeks ago, I stripped out the threads on one of my o2 sensors on my 1995 3.9L Disco. After driving around for a couple of weeks like that, I noticed that my milage dropped by about 25% (I keep very detailed records of milage, service, etc) and the vehicle was running noticably richer... As far as your questions about the 4.0 o2 sensor, I don't know for certain as the 3.9 only has one pair of them. Thanks, Nathan Hindman http://www.pangaea-expeditions.com |

Will the o2 sensors trip the service engine light if they go bad? I know that they do it at 56000 miles even if nothing is wrong. |

I think the O2 sensors will trip the Check Engine light. It's a relay/widget that trips the Service Engine light every 52000 miles (to remind you to check things like your O2 sensors, and misc other emmission components). If you disconnect them then you'll get what Nathan experienced, and can over-work other components that are trying to compensate for the missing O2 sensor data. Christopher, you say you can't remember which one went where, can you tell which side is which by the way the wires "want to lay". What I mean is, when wires lay a certain way for thousands of miles they tend to take on that particular shape and will sort of 'fight' being routed any other way. Jim |
