Long story...my truck died while on the trails a couple of weekends ago. It started right up and caused no further problems. A couple of weeks later it began to die while driving down the road. It would start right back up. As time passed, it would take longer to start it. Sometimes a good 15 minutes. It did not appear to be getting fuel. All electrical aspects were functioning. It would turn over, but not start. It was acting as if it were out of gas. I dropped it off at the dealer and told them I was having fuel pump issues. They called me the next day and told me that I needed a new VSS. I informed them that I had recently replaced the VSS and that the syptoms did not relate to a failing VSS. They assured me that this was the problem and fixed it. I picked it up, paid the near $500 they charged, informed them that I would return to discuss the bill once I gained my composure. I then went to a town about an hour away. It died again. This time it would not start. I had to have it towed. I explained the problem AGAIN. The next day I picked the truck up with a new fuel pump and harness. The credited me $300 for "misdiagnosis" and charged me for the tow and $700 for the fix. I again informed them that this was not acceptable since the tow was thier responsibility. I left with a limp from the screwing that I was getting and wouldn't you know...the truck is still dieing. Now it idles rough and dies while driving. It starts right back up. The engine just instantly drops idle and the check engine light comes on. Both instantly return to normal operation. What the hell is wrong with my truck?

fuel filter plugged or they didnt actually fix the fuel pump.

you need to get a manual and run the tests. you need to rule out the electrical issues.

fuel quality?, what brand are you running, i was recently advised that due to emmission constraints in my area BP has reformulated their fuels. this is ok, i guess, but the advice to me was stay away cuz the new cake doesn't work well in LR. to go along with this, i once raced a Ducati and it would run like shit with BP fuels in it. FWIW it may be worth a look at. also, some station have a bad history of not keeping a higher quality control on what gets spilled in their tank. it may be worth dumping the fuel in the tank and starting over.

My fuel pump died a couple of months ago and was having the exact same symtoms. Run one day, die the next...sometimes would start, sometimes wouldn't. Diagnosis is simple, on a day it isn't running turn the key and listen for the fuel pump to kick on, if you don't hear it then that is the problem.

I paid less than 300.00 for the entire new pump(I received a discount on Rover parts)and changed it myself, very simple repair. You have to remove some upholstery in the rear, lift up the carpet, remove the plate and there it is. 2 hours max repair time.

Update...I have a new fuel pump and it is still having the same issues. LR has it now and claims it may be a security issue because it is not throwing a check engine light. It did not start Friday morning so I took it to them. Once there, it started. Now they can't get it to act up to diagnose the problem. When I left the truck was sitting on a lift running. Does this sound possible?

Doing the same issue on my 97 Disco. Replaced the feul pump which had dies in 145K miles. Following that I replace the fuel regulator and that seems to have helped the running. She still starts hard and idles funny from time to time. I will keep you posted if I get it resolved.
