Got a price for a Warn 8000 winch without roller fairlead for $459.00. Is that a good price and is that a decent winch for my DII with ARB bumper? I don't have the jing to buy a 9000 at the present time.

Christian,

In my opinion, you should wait and save your money for something a little bigger. You will be thankful you did.

yeah, wait and get soemthing bigger.

if you are cannot wait and are willing to go thru the hassle of buying another winch when this one burns up, then that is a decent price, if new.

Enough said. I'm convinced. I'll wait. Thanks again. Frank, good to see you in here again...Are you going up to the Killington Expedition Society event this year?

especially when you are hauling a big load like Paul around. 8K ain't gonna move him and his truck out of much. especially with all those 40's sitting in the back.

That is a great price for a M8000. I don't fell that it is too small. If you get in a situation that you are stuck bad, just use your snatch block and now you have 16,000lbs of pulling power.
Most it the time you are not pulling your full weight.

no you dont have 16k pulling becasue they are lying about what it can pull. if it was the husky 8 k it would be a different story.

Yeah Garrett has a good point. Factor in the weight of camping gear, 40's, the dog, and other passengers; it all adds up.

Can't you use a pulley to increase pulling load capacity?

yes, it will practicly double as as said above

but if the winch can only really handle 5k effectivley then you double to 10k

truck weights 5k plus being stuck often takes more than 10k of pulling force.

Good rule of thumb for winches is weight of truck X 1.5 = Winch rating. I got a Mile Marker E9000 on a ARB and it workes great!

One thing to remember about winch ratings...most are rated on the first wrap on the winch. A Warn 8K only has 6k of pull on the 4th wrap. rigging a 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 will increase the pull, but reduces the distance you can pull. IF the ACTUAL pulling power is only 5K, then at the 4th wrap it only 3k...

Yes. Curb weight on the Discovery 1 is about 4000 pounds unladen.

I've seen 8ks incapable of pulling Rangies that weren't stuck in mud, rather merely didn't have enough traction/momentum to make it up a mild slope.
Don't waste your money on it.
