That article has been making the rounds here at Glacier National Park. All park staff carry Counter Assault pepper spray. It does work, plus its one of the few brands that is approved to carry into Canada. Guns are illegal in national parks, and usually ineffective anyway. Bears, especially grizzlies, can take a lot of punishment from a gun before it finally affects them. The lesson we emphasize from this particular article is the gentleman's comments on not making noise while hiking and on hiking into the wind. We cannot always choose the wind direction, but we always make noise and keep a sharp lookout all around while out hiking. And, never hike along. At Glacier, the bears have the righ-of-way. If you get into an unforunate encounter with a bear and you've been hiking at night or twilight, without making noise, without considering the wind, without paying attention to your surroundings, then the rangers will just look at you with that look that all law enforcement officers have that says "You stupid fool!" Come to Glacier and we'll teach you about bears. |
