I'm having a strange problem with my '97 Disco (SE-7).... The temperature guage reads very high, especially at idle and in stop and go traffic on a hot day. You might be saying, no duh, that's because the engine is hot, but it's not. The other variable is electrical load. If it's hot out, and I have the A/C running full blast, it will show hot, but if I turn off the A/C, the temperature reading immediately goes down to something reasonable. I am also pretty confident that the temperature is fine, because I checked the temp of the upper radiator hose, and even though the gauge said the truck was severely overheating, the upper radiator hose held at a steady 170 degrees. I've also never seen any steam, had the truck run funny, etc. So I'm pretty confident that the gauge is simply reading wrong.

The other thing I've checked is voltage, it seems to hold at a steady 13.5 volts at idle with a high electrical load. I was thinking it could be a bad alternator/voltage regulator, but if it was, I expected to see 9 volts at idle or something.

The questions is - Why?

In order to duplicate the problem, the truck must be warmed up, it must be an at least somewhat hot day and their must be a high electrical load at the time (A/C + brake lights, etc)

Apparently, its been doing this since I bought it, but I thought I was getting ready to need a new radiotor. Lately, it's been getting worse and even showing an overheating condition while I'm driving, not just sitting in stop/go traffic.

Any ideas?

Bad temperature sending unit??
I'm currently fitting an aftermarket temp gauge because I don't trust mine.

DAP sells the temp sender for about $8.50 - at that price it may be worth replacing. If nothing else, just to rule it out.

John I am having the same problem with my 95 Disco, the temp shows to be hot but the car runs fine, no steam, no mechanical problems, it basically just toggles up and down when I press on the accelerator. Like you it only happens on really hot days after the car has been running for over a 30 min period. I did just recently found out that one of my electric fans on the front of the radiator is not working when the AC kicks in. Check them as they both should be working together when the AC is turned on or when the engine gets extremely hot. I am going to take a look at it this weakend, I hope is just a bad connector but more the fan is toast and I will need to replace it.

Clean the grounds on the vehicle. High resistance to ground will cause this problem. Be sure to clean all of them because if one is starting to have high resistance more will follow.

both electric fans are working properly....

Anyone have hints on where the grounds are? That's one of the paths I was going to go down...
