Does anyone know if the 2003 Disco Stereo with the navigation system and CD changer has a line in port? If you go to the Harman Kardon website for that stereo it says it does.

I my car now I use a portable mp3 player with 20gb on it so I can essentially carry all my music in one tiny box. Since the nav stereo has no tape adaptor I can't interphase like I used to. Is it true that the lesser stereo with the tape also has lowe quality speakers and less wattage?

Or should I just get it for the better speakers and replace the head unit?

That NAV unit in the disco is a becker unit. I don't know if that company is owned by harman kardon.
You can get the regular head unit with premium sound.
The NAV radio is not user friendly, the buttons are small, the screen is hard to read, need to have a instruction book to navigate thru it, ect.

The line in is taken up by the CD changer, unfortunately. Back in early 2003, Blitzsafe claimed to be nearly ready to release an adapter to allow a line-in with the stock head/changer but after many failed contacts I eventually gave up. I should look again, it might actually be on the market now...

My wife has the NAV head in her Freelander HSE, and I love that thing. Contrary to Oliver's experience, after playing with it for a short period it seemed fairly intuitive to me, and I haven't had a problem with it yet. I use it regularly to find new places, and we even went mapless on a 2500-mile trip--it never let us down.

As for sound quality, I have the base stereo in my Disco S and it's... OK. Her h/k is *far* better. I would assume the same is true for the h/k in the Disco.

Thanks Nate. I was checking some alpine and other stereo head units and they are so expensive! It would cost me about $2500 to get any other nav system. Glad to hear the NAV does indeed work and the sound is good. I saw that adaptor on the web, but also coundn't find any info on where to get it or how it works. Besides, any aftermarket stereo has even smaller buttons.

Guess I will stick with the LR stereo. It would cost me almost nothing to burn all my mp3s to cd than to upgrade to an aftermarket unit. Costo has 100 packs for about $20 nowadays.

You're welcome. Just make a point to play with the NAV one afternoon and you'll be fine.

I just looked at the Blitzsafe website... Can't make heads or tails of that thing. I'll email them to see if the factory interface is out now... I still plan on getting one so I can put my XM radio in.. I'll post here if I find out anything; although if prior communications are anything to go by, I may not find out for months :-)

One nice feature of the LR NAV head is you will also get a 6-disc changer, and if you're not using the NAV you can slip a music CD in the NAV slot (in dash). Nice for popping in that new CD on the way home from the record store, and you still have the changer for your favorites. I miss that in my Disco which only has a tape deck/changer.

Nate,
I emailed Harman Kardon via this site:
http://www.hktrafficpro.com/

You can indeed use an AUX input. Here is the email I got back from them:

Land Rover TrafficPro units do have the Aux input feature. To select Aux, press and hold the tone control button for about 5 seconds to bring up the user menu, the select AUX to turn the feature on and off. You will need an Aux adapter kit to be able to hook the MP3 player...or any other external audio device....to the traffic pro. The kit is available at Harman/Becker (201-327-3434). The part # is 1319.116-276. PLEASE NOTE: THE USE OF THE AUX INPUT WILL ELIMINATE THE USE OF THE CD CHANGER SINCE BOTH DEVICES USE THE SAME AUDIO INPUT LINES.

Thanks, Jamil. That's the beauty of the Blitzsafe piece I am waiting for... It allows the use of both the changer and another AUX :-)
