Aside from putting a small amount of C4 under the roof, what is the "Tech Tip" for taking it off? I am starting my own "monster garage" conversion of my crunched disco, it is sad, yet fun.

Start by removing all the interior trim and moving wires out of the way...then youll get to see all the welds...and the fun begins

Howboucha M.K. and Chris!
I rolled it last week www.redbirdsra.com/disco.htm

I settled with my insurance company today and bought it back. Now I get to play!

I already took the hack saw today to the front doors so that I could get them open (we had to crawl out of the disco).

After I cut the first "window frame" off the drivers door, I realized "hmmmm, I could have just unbolted them". So before I start sawing off the roof I wanted to see if there is an easy way.

Any suggestions on what I should do to it?
Brendan

Wires, moulding and trim first , careful not to trash anything yet as you don't know what may be useful later in the project. So control the manly urge to demolish. Then all glass... Leave the doors on and closed to help maintain fit and shape as you cut away. If you want it to end well, cut away in small sections and adapted/revise as you go. It's hard as hell to put something back on. (Or what the hell get the local Fire Dept roof removal/Jaws of Life training video). Time a plan and some patience and you could end up with something cool. Don

There should be spot welds after you remove the interior. Drill every one of them out, preferably with a air drill. Start off with a 1/8" or a good 1/4" bit, then go through each hole with a bit slightly larger than the welds. Then you can use a air chisel and gently peel back the roof metal but be careful not to damage the good metal you plan on keeping. You can either do it that way or just torch it...Snap-on sells a new gadgit that actually replaces the torch, I don't know enough about it yet or the price.

Here is the update. I removed the interior last night. First advice, wear long sleeved shirt and gloves. I didn't and 24 hours later I am still itching!

There are a bunch of wires up there. I removed it with care and will carefully remove the sunroof goodies. (anybody want some motors?)

I started to remove the windshield, but got frustrated and came inside just now to do a search on windshield removal.

Here are my tenative plans. Basically cut everything off level with the dashboard back. This means the door window frames go bye bye, etc.

I am having fun, but it still sucks tearing apart the truck I digged so much.

I did get it running today. The back cylinders were full of oil, and it took several attempts to get it all out. Then after I got it running, I thought it was going to catch fire due to all of the spent oil getting on the hot stuff. It didn't, but sure did smoke a lot.

Any advice on the windshield and back window(s) removal?
Brendan
Oh yeah, I bought a 89 Mitsu Montero today. It will get me by for a few months until I can land another disco.

How badly is the windsheild/ frame damaged? The back door as well? Remove the back door completely and use a pickup air gate or modified cargo net??Windsheild removal tools i.e. suction cups and the specialized cutting tool can be had at many tool rental places. Don Full Rollcage, no wind screen, bomber helmet and goggles...too cool!!

I am not sure if this is the most proper way to remove a windshield, but I watched the Safelite guy replace mine twice (I wont go in to that). But anyway, he simply took a box cutter and cut downt he center of the rubber seal then simply pulled it out. He then took some tool that looked like a J with the hook part being a blade of some sort, then dug the hook/blade between the glass and the glued seal and went around the glass. He went around a couple of times. Then lifted the glass out. You might consider calling a glass company to see if you could pay the 10 bucks to pull it out or where you might find one of their tools or something.

Actually, thinking about it again you might be able to work it out with a long straight razor blade similar to the one in the box cutter. Just keep slicing the seal and glue away.

I removed the windshield yesterday. It bit. I used a small pry bar, utility knife and scissors.

Basically, I started in an area that had a gap between the frame and glass, used the prybar to open the gap (make sure you are wearing the proper PPE, glass shards fly everywhere) and used my utility knife and scissors to cut the adhesive. It took a long time, was sloppy, dangerous and sucked. The adhesive really works and didn't want to budge. Having the windshield in the hot sunlight propably helped me out. I rolled the shield into a tarp that I placed on the hood, the wrapped it for proper and safe disposal.

The rear side windows were easy. I simply cut the seal with a utility knife and pulled it out of the gasket. Now I know how to easily "break into" a disco! :-) I then proceeded to remove the sunroofs. That was pretty easy. I was suprised the glass wasn't damaged since the frames were bent.

I also went ahead and took off the rear gate. Anyone want to buy it?

We took it for a cruise down the road after we cleaned up the glass shards.

It was interesting, I felt like Mad Max.

I'll take some sunroof parts. I'll e-mail you a list.

Also, there is one fewer Range Rover in Southern Indiana. I got the '88 yesterday. It even ran all the way home.

(head hanging in shame) Yes, I did... Still wondering if I'm as nuts as the wife says I am, but the kid was smilin' like a bird-fed cat on the way home last night. Drove it right through the center of downtown Indianapolis with no plates!!! And all the way home too.

I got it for a fair price, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Well, he has crashed three times in four days, got arrested shortly after getting his license and is now officially high-risk.

Since then, he has again crashed his car, totalling it this time (third time this vehicle). I got him the Rangie for a few reasons, not the least of which being it won't go fast enough to get him into real trouble, it is big enough he will probably win any altercation he gets into, I can fix nearly anything on it and when it happens, I take the pieces home and build another trail rig...

Step-fatherhood has brought many changes to my thinking.

Peace,
Paul

Yea paul the Range would win, I remember the 2 times I have gotten rear ended, I asked my passenger "did we just get hit?" and the person who hit me got a nice hole from my shackle in there bumper and the other time the land rover hitch cover was literally stuck in their bumper and they couldn't get it out, along with a huge dent in both of em, and nothing on mine.

Let's see, the kid is now 18. His first crash was him rear-ending a car in the high school parking lot because he was leering at the pretty girl with square glasses. No, he never did get a date with her. Then, as his car was no longer driveable, I gave him my flat-bed. The first day he drove it, he drove into the side of a nearly new Blazer doing several thousand dollars in damage. Did I say the truck he was driving was an '83 Chevy with a flat-bed? The next day, he got rear-ended. Then, a day with no crashes, the next day, he nearly tears the door off my flat-bed, removing the passenger side mirror. Fast-forward to last month, he drives into the side of a pick-up truck that failed to yield to his right-of-way. My wife got there in time to hear the cop tell the driver of the other car that the cop wasn't going to assign blame, but let the insurance companies deal with it. My wife pipes up with I'm an adjuster... The cop looks at the kid's latest victim and tells him he's screwed!

Let's not discuss the arrest, he's OK now and drives much better-sort of.

After one of the crashes, I told him he had finally bested my three arrests in 62 days...

Peace,
Paul

It is my hope that between the tongue lashing he got last night for tailgating and his affection for this vehicle will combine to make this one last awhile.

If you make him buy his own, the wrecks will slow down. When I was 16 I blew 2 cars up in a months time. Dad wouldn't buy any more. I started treating the cars better when it was my money invested in them.

I have yet to receive the title in the mail. I have more going on trying to figure out the "custom" wiring beneath the dash. No wonder the battery went flat overnight.

That and shocks are on the list also, although the articulation is pretty good with worn out shocks if you survived to get to where you were wheeling.

Peace,

Okay, okay, I will get some current photos. I may put up a "diary" of the project on one of my websites. Chris, I see your getting a Defender? Very cool.

I picked up my "new" ride last night. It's an 89 Mitsu Montero. The condition is pretty good, but it's no rover. I felt very humble today. I "met" a guy on Hwy 46 driving a Disco today, I wanted to wave but thought "Damnit, he may think I'm gay or something". The light blue pinstriping on my Montero may have made it even worse. :-)

If anyone has a sawzall (sp?) and want's to help take the roof off, let me know. :-)

I am also having difficulty taking out the rear door(s) windows. Any advice (besides a sledge hammer)

Brendan

Well I like your approach, some C4 will fix that right up...Yup I am going to in about 9 months. I am so excited it will just take me a while to find one that I want. You want to take the montero up to attica brendan? Just put a big D-web sticker on it and you will feel fine waving.

Listen, I'm in Tennessee, and I'd just about PAY you to bring that Rover down here and let me take the roof off for you. I want to help so badly--and yeah, you could use the Jaws of Life and then just file down the edges. It would look fine--and if it doesn't, just remember that it's a Discovery with the roof chopped off and everything will seem to fall into place.

I put one of my Discoweb stickers on the Montero yesterday. I like it much better now. Would you believe it runs better and feels more powerfull then before I put the Discoweb sticker on?

I did take one of my favorite backroads to work today to see how it performed on the beaten path. It is a rough, 1 lane windy, hilly road that traverses three small creeks. For about 3 miles, it's under a complete canopy (trees). I was really enjoying myself until I came upon two dogs that were laying in a ditch. I stopped to survey the scene and sure enough someone shot them and dropped them in the ditch together. Man it pissed me off. Freaking hillbillies.

I am getting constant rubs at work about my crash. "And your our Safety Guy" they keep saying.

I did spend the extra $40.00 on my license plates to get the special "Hoosier Safety" one. I just hope that I don't roll the Montero!

Zach, just come up to my place and we can hack away! I plan on taking a sawzall home from work tomorrow and cutting the roof off this weekend. Damn it's going to be fun.
