'90 RRC won't start on multiple occasions. AFter 'gently' knocking the starter with the handle end of a hammer, it will start. Does the entire starter motor need replacing or just the soleniod? ideas?? Thanks.

Mine was giving me a click sound only at mid-warm. From a cold or hot engine it would start fine. I replaced it and problem gone. But not before replacing the battery and battery wires though. My starter had allen bolts verses standard bolts. Stripped the bottom one and had to grind it off. The top one, required removing the exhaust manifold for good access and torque to get it out. Could do it again now, in about 2 hours. Good luck.
