I lose power in my 97 Disco on the freeway. The check engine light indicates a bad sensor on Bank 1. I was told to check the plugs to see if one is fouled. Any other suggestions before I replace the sensor?

I have the same symptom, I think - significant loss of power at highway speeds (70 mph), but in a very rythmic, on-off pattern. It is fine (accelerates) for 2-3 seconds, then boggs down (decellarates) for 2-3 seconds, repeats indefinately or until the vehicle is returned to idle for a while. That fixes it temporarily, but after 10-20 mins of freeway travel, its back again... The "check engine" light doesn't ever come on while driving, though... Is it the ECU, or something more simple? Has fairly new plugs and wires.

Thanks,
James.

I had a simular problem but only after a long incline on the freeways. Sudden loss of power and then returned. I change out the VSS on my 97 disco and my problem went away. Hope this help!

I had similar problem, changed my fuel filter, and problem has not returned in nearly 2000 miles.

Al, I also have a 97 Disco - what is the VSS? Will also try the fuel filter...

Thanks for the info. Joey, did you have a Check Engine light before you changed the filter? My fuel pressure is a little below norm but the flow is adequate. I would also like to know what the VSS is. I really appreciate the help.

Your vehicle told you the problem, Bad sensor in bank 1. That's the oxygen sensor on the left or right, check the code again. :-)

James, I believe in your situation it is the VSS.
No check engine light and temporary loss of power.
Discountrovers carries the VSS for about $69.00.
I also change at my fuel filter at 50K miles.
Did not do so for any problems. Just 50K mantaince.

Fuel filter - you need to change it anyway, right? 80% chance it will fix you problem. Funny, wife complained of loss of power on her Miata yesterday. I drove it, nearly undriveable. Checked the maintenance schedule, it said replace every 30k. (hadn't been changed since new, 68k). Put in a new fuel filter, now like new.

Sorry, my '97 did not have a check engine light, I was just driving down the Interstate and it would loose power, then surge back to normal speeds, did this about 6 times in maybe 10 mile. Changed the Fuel filter and it hasn't done it since.

As per a friend who is a mechanic, he told me that you should change the fuel filter on any fuel injected vehicle every 10 to 15k miles. And for what it cost and with the rusting issue around the fuel filter, it probably isn't a bad idea.

Great input, thanks! Much better help than the BMW boards from when I had my 87 325es w/ 200K miles - talk about a beast to work on! Looks like the Disco will be a lot easier to crawl under and reach into!

So, I think I'll try the fuel filter first, since it probably is overdue anyway. Auto Zone OK for that type of part, or should I go to a Land Rover specialist? Any brands to seek out (or avoid?)

If the problem is still there (which I bet it will be, since it feels like more of an "on, off, on, off" thing like a sensor would do), I'll change the VSS (hey, I learned a new acronym!)

Thanks all...

I bought my Fuel Filter at Autozone, can't remember the name, but it was not made in the USA, and if I remember right it was between 10 and 14 dollars, but I am not sure....got the reciept in the Disco, but it is raining here in WV.

I have had the same issue on my 97 Disco since the day I bought her. The issues came to a head when she crossed over 80K miles. At that time I found out that the fuel rails can rust from the inside. (It has now happened twice at once at 80k and again at 145K miles each time killing the injectors, not cheap)The last time the valves were gummed up to add insult to injury. Now after all of this work I have replaced the fuel pump and the fuel regulator and while she seems to run ok it is hard to start. Not sure if that helps you at all but I strongly suggest looking at the feul rail, each time I took to the shop the feul filter and other adjustments would fix it for 5-15K miles before I saw symptoms again then finally it just died.
