hey guys I went on a little drive this afternoon and we had all the windows open cause it was a beautiful day here in northern Ca, and i heard this weird sound coming from the front right tire area. It was as i said in the subject line a creaky, squeeky metallic sort of sound. I heard it more when i was going up hill and not so much, or not at all when going down hill. when we were drving on one of those narrow, curvy, mountain roads typical of the area. it was all black topped over nothing rough at all. so is it just a normal sound for original shiocks/springs on a 96 disco with 66,000miles on it? or is it a bad spring and or shock? or is it something worse? anyone got any ideas? anythinh i should look more closely at? Some of you regular posters will probably remember my other posts but i should tell you that i have not had a rover before and i have only owned this one for a few weeks so i am not used to all the various sounds and rattles and do not know if the sounds are normal or out of place. I'm just trying to be cautious and learn my way around it. You guys have all been a great help so far and I'm sure you won't let me down this time either. |

JAson, I'd start with giving the splines and UJ's on the prop shafts a bloody good greasing as they can squeal when dry. The grease nipples can get a bit blocked. If that doesn't work, stick another post on the site. Alan |

Jason, Any good quality water repellant grease will be okk, it's more importantant to do it regularly. I know some people who do a lot of wading use marine grade grease. I can personally testify to the need to keep all your UJ's greased, as yesterday (about two hours after giving you this sound advice) my front propshaft departed from the transfer case with a big bang in the middle of a roundabout. It had been squealing for about a month, but the niple had snapped off and I thought it would last until she went in for her 100,000 mile service on Thursday. Oh how I laughed as I'm laying under my disco in my office clothes unbolting a red-hot propshaft in the middle of a roundabout. Alan PS - reason for delay in answer - I'm in the UK. |
