I am trying to reset my service engine light on my 97 disco. I found the archived post off here, however, when I poke through the sticker I can't get a response from the vehicle. The light is still on.

Is there a trick or something else I should know. The article said nothing tricky about doing it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is it the red light or the yellow light? If it is the red you should be able to reset it. If yellow it is the ECU and you need to read the code. I made this mistake when I first got my disco.

As I said before, it is the service engine light, that is the red one, the yellow is the check engine light, I do know which one I'm referring to, I just can't get it to reset as easy as it is described.
I have tried to use a paper clip, then cut a coat hanger, I tried both of them, neither worked. Do I push straight down, or is it at an angle? It just doesn't seem to be working.
Are there any repercussions to disconnecting it? If not, what would I need to do there?

Thanks again, I hope to get this resolved by tonight.

I just fixed mine yesterday. I found that the small plastic button inside was broken. So I opened the module up and found where the plastic was suppost to be, then just soldered the 2 pins together. It was very simple to do and took less than 5 minutes to fix once I found the module. There are only 2 pins that can possibly apply. Once I opened it up I realized how flemsy the push button was, so it is very possible yours could be broken. good luck

Hey guys, I need some help along these lines as well.(Me being the neophyte Disco owner) My yellow Check Engine light is on and I've done a cursory look for ECU. Umm, where might it be located and how can you clear the fault code?? I pressure washed the engine a few weekends ago and it came on. It runs fine, but when it was wet she stumbled a little bit but the cleared up. Ideas?? Suggestions??

Jeff,
Take it to autozone they will read the codes and reset it for free.

Turning off the service engine light: I find using a pocket screwdriver works well-big enough to bridge the circuit and conductive.

I have read the posts on how to turn the service light off. My service engine light flickers when I start from a stop sign or a stop light. So I know how to turn it off but I was wondering if it actually means anything? Does the service light mean my engine actually needs service?

This info is right out of the service manual.

RESET EMISSION MAINTENANCE REMINDER

The emission maintenance reminder is designed to activate at 52,500 and 105,000 miles respectively and will illuminate a ’Service Engine’ red warning light in instrument binnacle. The emission maintenance reminder must be reset
after required maintenance has been carried out and a new tamperproof label fitted by a Land Rover of North America dealer. This emission maintenance reminder is part of the Emission Control System Reset
1. The control unit is located in the passenger footwell.
2. Identify control unit and remove from plug.
3. Remove tamperproof label to reveal access hole for resetting.
4. Place a thin metallic probe into access hole and momentarily electrically short between reset pins inside unit.
