I am trying to determine if my CDL is working as I am not getting and indicator light on instrument panel. Does the CDL lamp check itself during starting ? Also, nothing seems to happen when moving the lever to the left. However, when the lever is moved upward to neutral then to the left and down or up it seems that something has engaged. Info would be appreciated |

I'm not an expert but the light should be on when the lock is engaged. If you are getting a clunk moving between high and low ratio it is more likely the gear set change than the lock. I sometimes have to wait getting the lock to release. On a gravel or dirt surface try engaging low range with diff lock and turn left to right while going slowly forward. This is how I wiggle the lock off - maybe it will help to engage it. I would me more suspicious of the lamp than the diff lock. |

I have a 96 also and it works best for me to engage the lock (or attempt to), put it in drive, drive a few feet then back to nuetral and check the CDL. Nine times out of ten the lock doesn't engage completely the first try so I move a little then try again and always engages. It must have something to do with the gears aligning correctly?? The light comes on after driving a little sometimes sooner, sometimes later, but no longer than say a minute of driving. |

I always have some trouble getting the diff lock to engage, so I just mess with it for a while until it goes in. It's probably due to infrequent use. |

No you can't drive it on the hwy (or pavement for that matter). Not unless you want to buy a new transfer case and anything else that breaks. |

when diff lock is engaged, it locks the front and rear axles, As a result, they revolve at the same rate. When you make a turn, the front wheels cover more ground than the rear wheels (they revolve more). this is not a problem in slippery conditions, but it will put a great strain on your driveline if you make any turns on dry pavement.

If you are stuck in the locked position, it may be advisable to remove the front driveshaft in the event you must drive the vehicle before you can get this remedied. |

I've tried every combination to get the diff. lock light to engage. I have crawled under the truck and it appears that the cdl lever is moving properly and engaging. If I were to put the truck on a rack and raise it up what would be the indications that the diff lock is working. |

For what it's worth, mine seems to work better(either locking or unlocking) when I back up a few yards after moving the smaller shifter... |

well.. my cdl works fine now! i found it WAY WAY easier to just slide under the truck -TAKE AIM- and spray it with half a can of regular old generic rust buster spray ($1), and a few moments later.. with a few taps from a rubber hammer on the shifter, i got movement. and a little bit of working, it got easier and easier.

I jacked up one front tire with the lever to the left and the tire spun. Is there anything else to try prior to taking to a (gulp)dealer? |

I just did the CDL test. I think mine is working properly, however, when I was in LOCKED mode I was able to turn the front wheel about 1/4 turn (it wasn't just "froze"). When it was in unlocked mode it would spin freely. Is the 1/4 turn normal? I would assume there would have to be some slack in the wheel. I never drove it in between doing the changes, I just kept flipping it back and forth a few times. Thanks.

i find my diff lock goes in alot easier, usually without the clunk and the rolling backwards and forwards trick, while doing about 5 km/h. i just brake go to neutral and move it into lock and then the same when changing out. works fine everytime |

Ok here it goes...bear with me as I am an ex-jeeper turn rover lover.. My 4hi &low lever moves into low and high but won't move right to left to lock diff?? I'm slowly going through the all the steps provided in the post...I've taken off my console, drilled out the rivits, hammered, lubed, etc etc.. still won't budge.. I tested the diff by disconnecting the c-bar and turning it and The Light Came on!! What a wonderful sight that was!! I hope you got an idea of where I am ...now heres my two dumb ex-jeeper questions 1) To engage the diff lock does the 4hi-4low lever need to go to the Neutral position then pulled to the drivers side (left) and either pulled to low or forward to high. OR does just the need to be in Neutral and you pull the 4hi 4low lever to the drivers side(left) to lock diff. ?? 2) In the picture I provided I am going to remove the entire assembly. I assume I only need to remove the bolts with red arrows and remove the pins with green arrows then the assembly will come out...Is there anything else I should know??? I'm hoping theres no gasket/bearings etc I will break or need to replace if I start dismanteling my landy... (The orange arrow indicates where I think its seized)

I own a 96 SE7 and my light is a little flaky. IT comes on when I engage, but goes out shortly after. I usually just jiggle the CDL handle towards the rear left and it comes back on. The CDL engages without any problem, it's just the light that is flaky |

I went ahead and took the entire assembly apart.. I had to smack it with a hammer for a good 50 times before it even started to move. Sprayed it with WD-40 and she started to loosen right up... Easy Job! Now all those dam pins I need to loosen up...and we'll see what happens! |

Phil, your Low/High lever does not need to be in neutral to lock the diff. Hope this helps. Greg- |
