Has anyone installed AB's HP cross drilled/slotted discs on their Discovery? Are they worth the extra money? Do they last longer and warp less than the stock Discovery II discs? Do they perform better when towing?

I've got the cross drilled/slotted with kevlar pads. Here's the good part - No brake dust, much more stopping "power." Less heat, the hot gas disperses more freely and all this equates to less stopping distance. I read somewhere the other day that the kevlar really eats the disc. I have not experienced that. Here's the drawbacks that I see - they don't work well out of the gate (cold). The first time I backed out of my driveway on a chilly morning I had to press pretty hard to get a complete stop. After about 1/2 mile to give the wheels a chance to warm they are fine. They just need to be warm for them to work effectively. But, if you're aware of this minor inconvienience then it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I imagine I'm going to have a difficult time finding someone who will turn these bad boys when/if I need them turned. The regular machine down at the local brake shop can't handle the cross drilled and slotted rotors.

I did some research on these a couple of years ago. Cross drilling has apparently been a contraversy for several years. Checkout www.brakewarehouse.com/tec3.htm
www.4wdworld.com.au/tipstricks/disc.htm
www.avalonracing.net/rotors.htm
each giving the breaks on brakes.
I've tossed the idea around myself, and believe that I will give them a try soon regardless of the drawbacks.

I have cross-drilled rotors on my car. They work great, I constantly surprise myself with how fast I can stop (along with other people :D). I've also driven the same car without cross-drilled and the cross-drilled seem much better. 'Course that's with the "butt dyno", nothing scientific.

Kelly: I suspect that the reason you need to warm up your brakes is due to the kevlar pads. I don't have kevlar pads and I know my brakes work great without warming. 'Course I don't know where you are so mine may not get as cold as yours.

Hope that helps,
Mike

I have cross drill/slotted discs and have had no problems. I find they pull you up better than standard discs. I guess where the problems could arise is if you have heated them up during a steep descent and then plunge into a creek or river.

Same here - DBA rotors and Ferodo pads (not kevlar) - no problems. Pad life will be much shorter though - FYI

Also - DAP has the entire kit including oil seals, pads, etc for about $385.
