I may need to replace my fuel pump in my 94 disco. It seems a simple enough job. However it is held in place with a large securing ring. The workshop manual indicates that you need a special LR tool to remove and refit. Is this the case? How tightly is it held in there? How can I ensure that I get enough torque when I tighten it back up? Does anyone know of any good tricks before I start? Does anyone know the dimensions?

Douglas,

Go to NAPA, get the biggest set of channel lock pliers they sell, open it up as wide as it will go and it will fit perfectly. To get even torque on both sides, fit a crescent wrench on the top of the channel locks and spin it around with even pressure on both sides.

There's no spec for torque, you'll want it TIGHT though, if it's not it will leak and fumes will stink up your truck.

While you're at NAPA you could pick up the replacement fuel pump too and save yourself about 200 bucks.

it's amazing the things the hammer and screw driver work for.

When I tried the hammer/screwdriver on my fuel pump ring, it just started breaking off tabs. Before I ruined it I decided I needed something that would work better.

That's when I figured out the channel lock thing.

I think that my locking ring was on way too tight for the hammer/screwdriver.

Course, whatever method you use, hammer/screwdriver/crescent wrench/other we're all bastardizing the 'official' way to do it using the special tool.

Hammer & Large Screwdriver (I used a large tent peg instead)!
