I was doing some work on my 96 D1. Carelessly left the doors open. Totally drained my battery. No dome light, no nothing. Put my portable charger on it this AM and it turned over fine, cranked away. BUT, it never started, just keeps cranking. Never kicks in. Normally starts in about 3 seconds. Not sure what is going on here, if its the alarm system, or the fuel somehow was disabled. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! -Mark

I'll keep working on it. Also, I'll post my results in case someone else has the same problem. Thanks, -Mark |

Mark - I had a similar problem when I first got my truck (D1). Discos dump a ton of fuel when starting. If I have to crank my truck more than twice 3-times tops, the truck will flood. Try pulling a plug or two to see if they're wet with fuel. If they're wet pull all the plugs and let the plugs and the cylinders dry out. Hopefully this will do the trick. |

Thanks Chad, Checked the plugs. Nice and dry. Since the battery died, I'm still leaning towards the alarm deactivating the GEMS or fuel supply. Just having trouble figuring it out. -Mark |

It's a fairly common problem w/ Discos in 96-97 era (I have a 97), that they will sporatically crank and not fire or not crank at all w/ the key turned. It results from a programming error w/ the anti theft module linked to the ECU. Mine would occasionally and for no reason just crank, then I'd turn the key off, try again and it would fire immediately. The dealer has to reprogram the antitheft module to make it right. It's fairly common as I said, the dealer has the service bulletin on it..it may be your problem....Jon |

Did you try a new battery, this cars take a lot of juice from the battery at start up. Does your battery act like is low when you crank up the engine? |

Yes. Brand new Optima red top. Cranks better than it ever has before. I'm trying everything I can to avoid a tow to the dealer. My next move is to try to get the EKA (Emergency Key Access) code from a dealer to completely disarm the security system. If anyone knows of a friendly dealer who could look this up it would certainly be appreciated. Thanks for all of the help so far! -Mark |

Hi Mark, During the coarse of working on your car did you happen to be working under the hood? If so, it could be that you have bumped or loosened the multi-plug that connects to your air flow sensor. A loose or dirty plug will prevent you vehicle from starting (and show all the symptoms you described). Let me know how you get on. |
