Having gone through 2 alternators already in the past 2 weeks, I have given up on my current rebuilder. Any suggestions on a replacement? Heard of those DAP people? Whats that website? How are the Napa alternators? My Fatherin Law can get me a NAPA gold for 240.

I bought a Napa one when mine died last year. It is still going strong now and haven't had any problems. I do like the security of the lifetime warranty. I was too cheap to buy a new one! :-)

After 2 rebuilts I went with a Mean Green, I wouldn't suggest anything else. I do now have a brand new rebuilt just sitting here though.

Is a Mean Green too much for a stock battery since it provides 300% more charging power?

I've driven about 4000 miles since I installed mine last month, no problems yet. Battery at rest is just over 12 volts, when running it is at 13.5 or so.

Hey Robert (just shot you an email as well), was wondering what size serp belt you bought for your new alternator? I just ordered a Mean Green unit myself and I remember reading that you had to buy a slighter larger belt. If you could let me know, would appreciate it. Thanks!

Robbie

My apologies...it wasn't from Napa, it was from Bap Import Parts. Sorry to misdirect you. It was $189 with lifetime warranty and they took out the old one and installed the replacement for me - no charge. I don't have the part # as the receipt is packed away in a box in the garage.

Compared to $750 plus labor that the dealer wanted for an OEM with 12 month/12k miles warranty, it was pretty much a no brainer as I actually did not have the time to sit around and wait for a replacement to come by mail as my Disco is my daily driver.

Sorry Blue, I'd rather put the extra $600-$700 I saved towards a couple of bottles of 2000 Grand Cru class Bordeauxs or a new roof rack from Northwest Parts or a weekend getaway with my wife to Cabo or.....need I go on?

It is your money to waste however you choose! Nonetheless, I am happy thus far with my purchase and would do it again in a heartbeat if the same problem should arise. Oh, did I mention it was a lifetime warranty? It won't cost me anything the next time around...

easy fellas...I was trying to make a point to our ambitious young friend Raf Usher (RU).

And Todd, don't try to sound all sophisticated with you 2000 Bordeaux - we all know that really rich men can afford FRESH wine. Bring us some fresh wine, the freshest you've got, this year, no more of this old stuff.

How about the "two buck Chuck" from Trader Joe's? Would that work? :-)

The merlot and chardonnay are pretty good...just stay away from the cabernet.

two buck chuck...LOL...not bad stuff. A bottle to marinate the steaks, and a bottle for the belly. Four bucks. LOL

Also good at Trader Joes (but incredibly expensive compared to old Chuck) is Black Mountain Fat Cat Cab - about 5 bucks. Their merlot is good too, but I prefer the cab as a marinade. Toss in some freshly picked habaneros or jalapeņos...damn, I'm hungry now. :-)

Garrett, note that Blue prefers to use the Cab as a marinade, and only the half of the rest is for the belly.

so he's half-way to a "good guy."

Just bought a case of Two-Buck Chuck (although in Arizona it's Three-Buck Chuck), good wine, hell, it's great wine for the price.

Meanwhile, back at the Alternator Ranch . . . About three weeks ago my battery light came on and my tach died, classic bad alternator syndrome. Replaced it with a BAP unit (although mine was $250, what's with Arizona prices?) Everything is fine, runs good, tach works, battery light is out.
Last week a high idle problem had me stumped so I drop the vehicle off at the dealer (there's a whole different story) and while it was there they tell me that the vehicle suddenly developed a starting problem. They're telling me that my alternator isn't charging but when I went over there with my handy voltmeter I was getting about 12 volts at idle, about 13.5 revved up and about 9 volts at the battery with the engine off. -And this time, battery light is not lit and tach is working just fine. I question them on their diagnosis and an actual LR mechanic (decent guy) emerges from behind a curtain and runs the same test with some handheld device(not the testbook) and shows me where it's reading "Charging Problem, No Charging Volts"
Does it make sense that the alternator would go bad but not illuminate the battery light and the tach would still be functioning?
Am I getting flim-flammed?

Jim,

One thought is that if the alt died very recently, you could be running off of a near-fully charged battery. This could possibly explain why you have not (yet) seen the usual indicators of impending alt failure (e.g., tach, batt light, radio, etc.).

And Blue,

I'll have to try the Fat Cat Cab. The expensive stuff is for collecting.

My Mean Green came in the mail yesterday. It asks for a 25mm x 2315 mm belt. I called NAPA and they said they don't have any metric measured belts. Any ideas on where I can get this belt?

The stock belt is 88" long. From that number, the Mean Green calls for a belt two inches longer.

Everybody makes this belt...

I called Mean Green they said that they used a 91.5 inch Goodyear Gatorback on their prototype install. Of course I can't seem to find this belt and suspect it may not exsist. I've called a few local Goodyear shops and they have the belt in a 90 inch and some other longer length. I waiting to hear back from a guy at Goodyear who was going to really look into it before I go buy the 90 inch and wrestle it on.
