J.D. Power & Associates' survey of new-car quality publicly revealed its losers as well as its winners. Land Rover "bombed in the survey."

Of course, they always do. And Lexus is always toward the top, but who would want one of those POS.

Regardless, I will still buy a new one when it's time to trade mine in. Just hope the 2003 and future Disco has many improvements.

But are they wrong though? LR has never had the reputation of building high quality vehicles. A look through this board is evidence enough with the number things that go wrong and often times, it's thing that shouldn't crap out either. Sunroofs, windshield wipers, electrical gremlins, window leaks, leaks in general, O2 sensors, manifolds cracking etc. A lot of these things shouldn't go as soon as they are going. The only difference is that most of us on here are willing to put up with it.

Bill, are you telling me that if you could have a LR with the build quality of a Lexus or Toyota, you wouldn't want it? I think most of us would jump at that opportunity if it presented itself. I know I would but in the mean time, I still love my truck. All Ford has to do to improve LR is improve build quality. Bring it up to a respectable level and when buyers see this, they'll start buying more of these things. They don't need to completely redesign them to get people to buy.

Supposedly BMW invested many millions in disco's production line, which should yield quality improvements. My 2003 certainly seems well put together.

Although I did have the rear wiper fall off this winter and I currently have a mysterious oil leak from the 4.6... So who knows. Hopefully it will prove reliable in the long run, because I certainly bought the disco with the intent of keeping it a very long time...

What do you expect in a survey when there are so many problems with virtually every rover built. Lexus has the best quality around so how can say it's a peice of shit? I'm glad i'm selling my rover- not because there are things wrong now, but what I am positive will go wrong in the future.

Boy, touch a nerve there didn't I. Maybe I'm just old school but if I'm going to buy a SUV, its going to serve a purpose that a car cannot (i.e. go into the bush or get up my road in winter - we don't have to do the soccer/little league thing anymore and the grocery store is half hour a way down a road..., well that's a polite description actually). Therefore, I want a vehicle that looks and acts like an Army truck. I don't want fancy chrome, nifty graphics, running boards that retract, etc. When I had my '94 Disco it fit the bill pretty reasonably, probably better than my current '93 LWB (coil converted so no EAS). So think about it. What can you buy that's 5-10 years old, a reasonable bush truck that isn't going to have big honkin' pieces of body work come flying off the first time things get a bit rough, still reasonable different in style and personality and (drum-roll, please) only costs $5-10K or in my case, $8-14K CDN? Would it be nice if a Rover had Lexus build quality? Sure thing, but I've never had serious problems with any of mine, including an old 2A that I had once. But being the old dino that I am, I expect to have to work on things in this environment and I do it all myself anyway.

Here in N. Ontario, a Lexus does not even come close to fitting into any of these criteria. A Hummer, a 230GE, or something like that might, but alas those are even less common than a Rover. At least with a bit of thought and the local Canadian Tire, I can go and get what I need to keep these things running. May not be dealer parts, but hey, it works.

So I didn't mean to offend, but JD Powers never ask people who live in the middle of bloody nowhere what they think about cars. And frankly, if we were talking cars I'd still have a Jag or an MB over a Lexus as well. Crazy, I guess

Bill, you are so correct. I live in NE and I am a ski bum. This past winter was GREAT! My Disco did more than my friends SUV (none LR). Now my wife on the other hand would want the Lexus, because girls want pretty things. But she knows when push comes to shove, it's the LR that's going to come up top.

Bill is right, an SUV is that a UTILITY vehicle, not a soccer mom car, if you can't at the very least attempt to go where no one with a 600 dollar car payment would dare to go then its just another car with four (sorta) wheel drive.

one thought i have on this is that LR is often seen as a strict luxury SUV (at least in my area, ohio, USA), in fact, i have never seen anyone with a modded disco, or even a club in my area. So most of the owners are the "lease-and-forget" suit tyes, who expect no problems, even though they buy BP 87 rated gas, and drive in traffic, skipping the tune ups, and have no clue how to check fluids.

to them, the rover sucks for reliability, and again, the rover is often marketed directly to them, at least here in the US.

thats like hummer, how many hummer owners actually care for the vehicle?

rovers are like McIntosh audio gear, you have to care for it to last, but it's nearly the best when it is cared for.

Lexus may have more followers. But how many Lexus Clubs are there. And how many people belong to those clubs. LandRover has got many LR enthusiast organisations and many members that enjoy the benefits and tolerate the quirks.
