How about a part time kit? These guys offer one for the LT230 T case: http://www.bcboffroad.com/newcomp.html I haven't seen it, so I don't know about the kit's quality. It may be an option for you. |

you just cant take out the front drive shaft, in an all wheel drive system all 4 wheels have to be on the ground.....you will have to shift your center diff into 4 high to get it to work.. and again why would you want a 2wd disco...again I hope not gas milage |

Carter how astonishing? I wouldn't be opposed to the idea. Its real easy to to pull a driveshaft. A 1/2 an hour job. |

Last time I had to drive without the cv joints, it snowed. I was just driving along up a hill and tires just started spinning away. Next thing I know I was fishtailing all over the place. RRD + Snow + LR = bad |

Good point Brian. The only reason anyone should have a 2by4 disco is cause they just busted a cv. |

or if they are going to be doing nothing but driving on dry paved roads for long extended periods of time and would like a little bit better gas mileage.... Snow doens't just sneak up on you during the summer or anyting. |

Carter.....you have to watch out for the sneaky, covert snow. The stuff is lurking everywhere.

Carter, IMHO, anybody thinking about losing a driveshaft for the sake of gas mileage doesn't need to be in a Disco. |

I'm talking TEMPORARY here Zach.... Come on man, I'm sure plenty of people find themselves in the possition I'm in: Working a whole a bunch, going to school, and no plans of going offroad in the next 2 months. Its really not that hard to pop the shaft on and off. I'm not sure if the savings could ever be cost effective enough to warrant installing all the stuff neccesary to let you convert from full time 4x4 to 4x2 with the pushing of a lever and turning of some hubs..... But maybe if you did a lot of traveling the gas milleage might pay for itself, I don't know. I do know that given the savings from just having the drive shaft off I would really like to see how much milleage changes when the hubs are taken out of the equation as well. |

i dont want to loose 4wd all together i just think it would be nice to have the option of taking AWD off and have just the rear tires pushing. it would make driving in the rain, snow and mud or anything of the sort a lot more fun. but really i think the gas mileage, the wear and tear and the tire spinning all play a big role. i was really just curious p.s. i was just kidding about taking the front driveshaft off that would just be plain dumb unles s you had a damn good reason |

depending on how often you think you would need to temporarily loose the 4wd its not that dumb. Like someone said above it only takes 25 minutes and is a lot cheaper than all the other stuff you are about to embark on. |

Just something to think about, you'll be putting more stress on your rear axles doing this, over time this could significantly affect the life of you rear axles. |

Spend $1000 on a little car with 2wd. I'm about to do the same thing--commuting to school this fall. $1000 for a 1981 BMW 320i that gets killer gas mileage. It doesn't have to be a show-stopper, but at least I won't go through $100/wk for gas for the rover. Oh, FWIW, disconnecting EITHER drive shaft is a really bad idea. You would also have to drive around with the central diff locked. That's just asking for problems down the road. |

I have part time 2wd on the Serious One and on the CrewCab. I also have freewheeling hubs on the front axle of the CrewCab. It's not for everyone, but it does have it's advantages. Flame away, I've heard it all before! |

You do what you wanna do Zach. I've been told by others whose opinions I really these matters that its not that big of a deal so thats what I'm doing. It sure is cheaper than $1000 plus another insurance payment, thats for sure. |
