Hmmmm! Let me guess, photo 3 is where the disco has disappeared under the mud!

FWIW, One of the rules on off-roading through mud states, "If you can't walk it, you can't drive it!

among other nice 4wd's. mud is the devil.
Roland in terms of what you said "if you cant walk it, you cant drive it" I have had an experience or two where that statement is knull and void.

I don't see how! I will say it again...If you CAN'T walk through a mud bog (not a pool of water with some mud in it), how are you going to drive through it?

Let's look at the above photos as an illustration. Are you going to suggest that you could drive through it without getting bogged?
I'd like to see that!

hmmm I think I hear Thom coming to prove Roland wrong......

Ever seen that footage on TLC or Discovery cannel (from iceland I believe) where the guy hydroplanes across a lake??? Yeah, I don't think you can walk through a lake either.

actually, we drove through it about 3 times before getting it stuck. they're stock tires, the tread got filled with mud and the weight of 4 people bogged us down. like i said, that was my 3rd or 4th trip through

Holy crap. You people are truly insane. Ripping on the guy because he drove through a mud puddle? You can't go wheeling in the midwest and not have to deal with that unless it is mid august and hasn't rained for weeks.

He's got a stock disco on stock tires and was able to be pushed out by two skinny guys. Geeze, go find another thread to rip on people for no reason.

Funny in the dweb back east video you sell them wheelin in mud. In the rubicon video you see them driving on flooded salt flats. Would both of those qualify as rust causing events, or stupid for doing because its a rover? So what if drive through a mud puddle, you should rip on him for mudding with stock tires and no winch, not because he went into a mud puddle. I agree always check a mud or water crossing before you do it, but shit mud is part of 4 wheeling. Watch the part of the rubicon video on the dusty ephram, you can see a great shot of Ho stuck in the mud being winched out by Axel.

i did check the mud puddle before we crossed it. yeah i'm stupid for going in with stock tires but not for crossing a mud hole. land rover owners get ragged on by the 4 wheel drive world because they're not "rugged" enough. well maybe thats because most of you are afraid to get a little stuck. everyone needs to stop with the Jeep vs. LR vs. HUMMER thing. just go offroading and have fun

Christopher, the story I got was that the guy is from the states and a buddy of Thom's but I'll let him chime in with the real story because its been a while since I've heard it. He told me about it and at the time I vaguely remembered seeing it on tv. Suposedly he drives across some river here in the US all the time as well.

I had a similar mudding incident a few years ago with my Mercedes ML430. My friends convinced me I would not get stuck. Not quite as messy as yours, but we managed to keep our shirts on.

Well I think I would have kept my windows rolled up, and those guys would not have got back inside until they changed. And I would not try that now without another truck around. That said I was 30+ years old before I could convince myself that the best thing to do was turn around and go back when confronted by a hole like that on a trail.

I guess with age, and a few thousand dollars worth of repair bills, comes wisdom.

being as i'm 17, i dont think about these things. the interior was completely covered in mud, i'm still cleaning it... the engine bay has a thick coat of mud all over it... i need to clean that so it doesnt overheat or something. but come on, you have to admit the pics are sorta cool. minus us without our shirts on

Two skinny dudes must have at least the pulling power of a warn m8000.

Yes Damien, the pics are pretty cool. That is some soup.

If your truck makes it out the other end more or less undamaged than you did good.

Take the pressure washer to the underhood mud, just be careful, you dont want to piss off LUCAS.

Damien, when I was 17, (long time ago), i had a Renegade CJ7 down in Charleston. That's all we did there. Mud holes were all you could find to have fun in. Of course, cleaning a CJ7's interior is a lot easier. Pull the drain plugs and spray out with a hose.

You guys had fun!!!! That's all that matters.

nope, no dents from that expedition. the dents i was talking about in another post were from a minor tree incident a few weeks ago... my car gently rested against a tree on an incline and made a dent or 3... you can hardly see it but it bothers me... i only got a few scratches from the latest trail ride

I remember being 17 with my dads bronco. My buddies and I took the truck into this mud field and drove all over the place. After a hour I sunk the front real bad, trying to get it out put us up to the doors and the back was stuck real bad. We dug it out, put down branches lots of pushing and mud flinging we got it out. We then took it home to clean it, a million quarters later at the spray wash it was clean. About a month later my dad comes to me and said where did I take the truck to wheel? I played dumb,"What?...". He took me outside, he was changing the oil, mud was caked in the engine bay, even on top of the air cleaner. I was so busted, he never really let me drive again after that. lol

mud is great. no mud no fun i say. here iz oz we get some great mudholes. and i agree with the post a little urther up. land rovers are always being ripped on. bout time some ppl had the balls to show them all. so long as the mud is washed off all is good. i know when i go muddin in nearly never check the depth of the hole. my rover is lifted 2 inches and has bigger tyres than stock on but..you never know if you never go..

Who cares it is his vehicle. At least he had the balls to get stuck, take his shirt off (since he is one of the two skinny guys), take pics and post them. Most of you, if you had been in that situation would never have taken pics much less posted them. Some of the modifications I see on peoples rovers make less sense to me than driving through that mud pit. Give the kid a break its his car he can drive off a cliff and post the pics for all I care, just because I wouldn't do it in my vehicle doesn't mean I don't like to see pics of someone else in a bad situation. I give him credit for being young and not spending 3k on mods before he gets it dirty. I would bet his Rover will see more dirt (mud) than most rovers that show up at MAR every year. I have to agree the jeep and hummer bashing gets old. I admit the kid with the yellow hummer was a little over the top, but who cares. I think it is 4x4 racism. I guess it depends what you drive, I just never hear the jeep or the hummer guys bashing on us.

Well I see them bashing on us and I think its as stupid as us bashing on them. I own both a ’99 Sahara and a ’00 Disco and love them both. No reason to bash either one. But things to me are never black and white, always gray.

That's all well and good with me. Not trying to stir up any trouble here, guys. In my opinion, MUD is part of off-roading, but MUDDING is a waste of time and a dumb idea in general. Therefore, he who muds (in my book) has a little bit of dipshit in him. And I'm no better--I've done it once, too. But that was all it took for me. I'm glad the kid had a good time--that's all that's really important. And it doesn't matter if Warren has been on D-web for 30 years--I wouldn't treat him any differently. And Chris...a month isn't such a long time, but you're right. He was here first. Does this really matter?

Cleaning tip: don't get the engine caked with mud. It will never be the same. No matter what you do to clean it, the mud will stay in all the little cracks--it flows in like water, and when it dries, you're fucked. Keep it up and it will just build and build...

BTW Chris--I'm only 18, too...a kid to some, but I've been around long enough to know a smart move from a stupid one...blaming ignorance on age is (quoting Aleen) "bullsheet."

Hey carter, did'nt you drive your truck into a bottomless hole awhile back? How is it since you got it back from the ? Not being a smart ass just wondering.

Hey Ken... Yeah after a new stepper motor and a starter its been running wonderfully ever since. I sure wish it didn't happen right at the end of the term when I had no time to mess with it cause it was a hefty repair bill, well actually since it technically happened on a road that was washed out it was an insurance claim so it was just a deductable.

Man Zach if you are telling people to never get mud on the engine I just have to wonder.... I drive through one mud hole on a trail, even if i'm not 'mudding' and there is mud all over under there.

I am a disco web reader. Judging by small the amount of posts that I have submitted to the discoweb it is obvious that I am doing something with my life besides dwindling the day away behind the computer at the office. I post when it is necessary.

I use the discoweb as a resource to maximize my vehicle to its fullest potential.

This should not be a place where someone gets called a dipshit because he likes running his truck through the mud every so often.

I like all the types of offroading: Rock Crawling, Easy to extreme trails, fording water, and running through the mud has its high points.

A shot out to my bitch Zach - Your eighteen years old, you have a cool rig but yet you sit on your computer everyday when you could be enjoying the outdoors in your truck and chasing some eighteen year old sluts around. Get some maturity and stop fucking with people on the internet. If you wanna start shit with people the come knock on my door. Man up about it.

Its people like you Zach that give Discovery owners a bad name.

Who's the dipshit now.

Thats Right . . . you are!

Warren

That's right, Warren...I am. Boo hoo...feel bad for me. I call it like I see it. Mudding is a dipshit thing to do...if you don't agree, then that's just fine. Frankly, though, I couldn't care less. I appreciate the compliment about my rig. And there's no need for me to come knock on your door...if you want some action come on down to Tennessee. Hell, I'll meet you at the exit.

Oh, Phillip--
Yes, I am really big into mountain biking. I raced for a few years, and now I'm starting to get back into that scene. I've raced xc and dh, but am looking to sell my dh bike now. I live in Bradley County, which is one county over from Cherokee County N.C. (where they caught Eric Robert Rudolph). If you ride, we should meet up sometime--there are great trails between here and there--Chilhowee Mtn. on the Ocoee River, and also Tsali up in N.C.

And BTW Warren--last time I checked, you were only 19. It's not people like me who give Disco owners a bad name, It's badasses like you who give D-Web a bad rep. I'm not bashing on the kid...your post was way out of line though. I'm not picking on anybody from behind the computer--like I said before, I call it like I see it. Odds are if I thought you were a dipshit I'd tell you, too. However, I don't have anything to base an opinion on, other than your post. So, instead of me deciding that you're a dipshit and calling you one, you've just proved it yourself. Thanks buddy!

Zach

p.s.--If you want directions to Cleveland, I'd be more than happy to get them to you...I'm excited now.

I ride XC well just trails callit what you will. some urban assault action everynow and then I go to WCU, Western Carolina University. there is a shitload of stuff to ride out here and offroading as well. I have ridden Tsali its funny to see people out there all in thier high tech bike gear and all. I never raced but all my friends trying to get me too. I have riden with some fast folks I just a little conservative on the DH I had a concussion or two and some broken helments. E-mail me or something if you make it to western NC.

This stuff would be so much cooler if you actually were travelling somewhere by Land Rover and HAD to go through the mud to get there. But I envy your environmental conditions there. Out here in CALI we've just got rocks and other stuff you "can walk". Would rather I couldn't.

Damien, that's called "Marketing"

Glenn
those types of pictures actually led some people to believe that the newRR actually can 'survive' underwater for 15 seconds or so, via a "closing air intake" mechanism....

Damien, if you have about 1 hour to spend reading, check the Archives for the 2005 Disco Spy Shots. That will explain the closing air intake mechanism...LOL

Yea, that does suck when you have to pay someone else to fix something you could have done yourself. you got to love insurance companies at times like that. :-)

Here's a photo of the 2005 Disco, but I can't see where you would fit the closed air intake mechanism?
LOL

Chris, southeast Tennessee...in the corner with North Carolina and Georgia.

Phillip, I've got an INTENSE that's set up pretty sweet--I still need to sell it, though. Let's ride sometime.

yeah Ken, it didn't raise the rates so I'm happy :-) Having it laid up for 4 weeks sucked though but at least I was able to play the rental car company for a full size chevy pickup for the same price as a ford focus (the only rental class the insurance company would pick up 100% of the tab for).

Glenn!!! Your fired!! I just spent a considerable amount of time reading that 2005 Spy Photo thread. I must be a dumb shithead 'cause it certainly took me longer that 1 hour to get through it, and I stopped at post 500 and something. Crimony, how could you suck me into that crap like that???
