We are in the process of trying to drastically get out bills down and are going to be selling our boat and our 99D1 in order to get an older Rover. Whatever we sell the boat for, we'll turn around and buy a rover. We are looking at getting either an older D1, probably 97 or older, or a Range Rover Classic, LWB or SWB.

I don't do any real hard core wheeling, Pine Barrens, a few assorted trails in PA, Paragon, GWNF etc. So I'm not really going to beat the piss out of our Rover, and I need it to last a while. I'm still going to go wheeling as much as I can, but I highly doubt I'll be doing a Moab trip or other more challenging trails.

And how capable is the RRC compared to the disco. I know the Pre 90 RRC has the locking center diff, and I believe the 90-95 does not.

Which one do you think will last longer?

Thanks in advance,

Zak

Why? They are very, very similar and you already have a 99 why sell?

We are trying to get our bills down, so we are gonig to sell the 99 and get an older one with the money from the sale of our boat. That way we will not have a very expensive car loan every month.

Just trying to get a general concensus. I'm leaning towards another Disco since I'm quite familiar with them, and I already have the Safari roof rack and RTE sliders to put on it.

Na, I'll leave the honda's for all the other lemmings that buy them.

I vote for RRC, I may be a little biased since I have one, you can get one pretty cheap these days, RRC and D1 pretty much the same in off road ability. Your RTE sliders will fit a RRC Swb, and your roof rack might also fit if you get shorter mounting feet. Mechanicals pretty much the same also, just be prepared to wrench yourself on any older RRC or Disco if you want to save a little money.

I've had to put about $5K just in parts in my '93 RRC. By 100K basically a lot of the car had worn out. The brakes, radiator, suspension bushings, u-joints, all belts, oil and transmission cooler lines, front wheel hubs rebuilt, steering box & pump, headliner, catalytic converters, distributor components...I could go on.

I figure the air springs, abs accummulator will be due in about a year. Also, fuel costs are high.

I've done all of the work myself - otherwise the repair costs would have simply been too high to justify.

That said I have a pretty cool car for $16K invested. I have had fun working on it (usually).

Is it smart financially? Not compared to our '99 Isuzu Trooper, that with 60K miles is worth about $11K-$12K. We drove it off the lot new and its never been back for anything except fluid changes. The Rangie is probably worth somewhere between $6-$9K even with the new parts. If I were to buy another used 4x4 and running costs were important its hard to justify the Rangie based on my experience.

Retail for your '99 is in the high teens for a D2, lower for a D1. I would just pay off the Disco or refinance it if you want to stick with a LR. Or find a Classic that some idiot has put a lot of money into and is selling it...

Hi Zak,

There are two killers on 90-95 RRCs.

1. The ABS system, have a pump or MC die and it is crazy dollars, and used are very scare and expensive, plus bleeding them is a nighmare.

2. The T-case, the viscous is suspect as is the chain on any high miler, they are not cheap used and new is ridiculous. LT230 is 10x better, especially if you wheel.

Most people say EAS, but for $100 for some parts and used springs you never have to worry about that again.

I had this exact discussion with a friend in almost the same situation, was leasing a DII, did not want payments because wife was not working anymore, he ended up buying the red 95 DI with 70k from Alyssa (see Cheap Disco Is in the for sale section). I think he would have preferred a classic, but everyone he saw had a potential high dollar issue hanging over it, ABS pump was running, t-case was whining, engine sounded bad, etc. so he ended up with the disco.

Thanks guys. I've been leaning towards getting another Disco but just wanted to hear some opinions. I love the LWB that Rans bought off of you guys, but I don't want to deal with the air suspension and abs.

You guys take a nice boat for a trade in?????

Zak, in all honesty, if your trying to reduce your cash flow-out, why would you consider a LR? Ours is still under warranty, but I can see the day when all the little things are gonna be out of pocket and I will consider something else that gets better mileage, fewer repair issues, lower insurance costs. LR's are expensive to run/maintain. just my $0.02 worth

i have owned both i think you will be better off with a cheap disco. for reasons like if the ABS goes your brakes are still save and the t-case is already more reliable.

if you buy an old old RR like 87-88 with the locking t-case you will almost certainly have to deal with eletrical issues just because of age.

now of course if you get a smoking deal and you have the know how to "restore" your range rover then i'd go with it. thats what i am doing erven though i dont have the know how.

Oh I know all about the cash flow output of a Rover. Mine has had it's fair share of leaks, etc. All covered under warrenty so far. We just love Rovers. It fits our needs perfect. We need something to haul a lot of cargo, make runs to the lumber yard, do moderate off roading with, and have some class at the same time. Which other vehicle could do this?

Thanks Rob. I've been leaning towards getting a disco. I've found a few I'm interested in already but have to sell our boat first.
