I finally registered my wife's Disco, it had been sitting in the driveway for about 3 months. We seem to be have two slight but annoying problems with the truck. First, the rear cargo door will not open. We had opened the door to put our dog in the back and when we went to close it, it would not latch. I stuck my finger in the latch mechanism to free it up and closed it and it latched. When we got home, I went to open it and I could not move the outside release handle. I tried the interior handle and it almost feels like it is disconnected? I tried locking and unlocking the door with both the remote and the key and still cannot move the exterior door handle. It is jammed solid. Any ideas?

The second problem involves the radio. It is the factory AM/FM cassette with 6 disc CD changer. I am guessing that it has some sort of amplified subwoofer because every now and then you a get a loud alternator whine through the speakers and suddenly more bass. It seems as though the amp is no good. Any ideas where it is located? Is this a common problem? It sounds much better with the added bass except for the alternator whine.

All in all it seems to be a good truck considering it has 143000 miles on it. BTW, it is a 5 speed which makes it pretty cool to drive. I am not sure yet which I like better, the Disco or my 89 RRC.

Thanks,
Jeff

the door may just need a bit of lube and the amp is under the passenger seat. that whine you hear may be the delay between the radio coming on and the the amp firing up.

Mike,

Thanks for the amp location. The whine is constant as long as the subwoofer is active. Sometimes when you hit a bump the subwoofer kicks out and the whine goes away, hit another bump and it all comes back again.

The door may very well only need lube but unfortunately I cant open it and I dont think I can get the door panel off with the door closed.

Jeff,

I've been through this so many times I don't know where to start...

I've had a number of problems with the rear door on my 95, and also now on my 94. The problem on the 95 sounds like yours, and it's the second time it has happened on this truck.

I doubt lube will help, when I popped my door panel off I found a small clip in the bottom of the door that had broken off the mechanism somewhere. First time I just had the dealer fix it, but this time I'll be watching your post to see if anyone can shed some light on fixing this myself...

Good Luck,
Chuckster

Jeff:
If the 94 is the same as our 95, the amp under the seat is only for the four front and rear speakers; the amp for the subwoofer is in the back door, attached to the back of the two woofers. The electrical manual has a series of checks for the wiring harness between the main amp and the subwoofer amp, which might be your problem, given the intermittent nature. In our case, the wiring checked out fine but we never have sound from the subwoofers, so I'm guessing our subwoofer amp is kaput.

Jeff, I've had the same problem on my 95 Disco, the whine will sometimes come on when I hit a bump and cut out when I hit another bump. I know this might sound strange but look in the pannel right under the steering wheel, the one you pull to look at the fuses. When the whine is happening play with the few wires that run right through the steering wheel column, in my case one of my wires was making a contact with metal causing this high pitch whine and loud bass sound. I wrap the wire with some electrical tape and fixed the problem.

Jeff, maybe the full moon might be reason for the door jam. My 95 did that to me yesterday. Its still stuck. I am not sure what to do. The lock seems like its not engaging.

Chuck, how did you get the door panel off? Any way you can guide me on doing this? Or should I just take it to the dealer. Do you remember how much the dealer charged for this?

Thanks for all of the replies. I got the door open today. Here is how I did it: I removed the top half of the door panel using door panel removal tools, you can use a screww driver. All you need to do to remove the panel is carefully pry the panel off. It is held in place with plastic pins. Be sure to pry as close to the pin as possible and do it slowly yet firmly, you dont want to break the pins. You also must remove the trim from behind the interior door handle, just use a phillips screwdriver to remove the 1 screw that holds it in place. Next remove the door pull handle by removeing the 2 10mm bolts. Once all of this is done you will be able to see the latch and related linkage. All I did was work the levers with my fingers and a screwdriver and the door opened. Once the door was open I lubricated the latch from inside with WD40. Now everything works great. All it needed was some lube.

Thanks again,
jeff

There is a great article in the July LR Enthusiast on the back door problem.

I had the same issue and had the entire latch replaced. Any indie LR shop had to get a tool from the dealer to get the stuck door open.

Check out the article!
