I have a 97 D1 with over 100K miles. For the past 40 - 50K miles it seems that the A/C freezes up after running for about 40+ minutes. If I turn off the compressor for a few minutes it seems to let the unit warm-up enough so that I can re-engage the compressor and get cool air.

Possible drain-line blockage which is causing the freezing? If it is behind the firewall how much surgery is needed to correct the prooblem? Any way to access these drain lines without removing the entire dashboard?

Thanks

If it's freezing, it's probably low on refrigerant. Have it leak checked and recharged.

When it does work the air is cold. I would think if it was low on refrigerant and/or leaking I would never get "cold" air. I have had this issue for the past 2 years or so, so I would suspect that by now I would have lost all refrigerant.

But it is worth another look I suppose.

Another related question: If I was low on refrigerant why would that cause the AC to appear to freeze up, etc?

It's all about exspanding gases. If the level is low the liquid will exspand sooner than it should, causing the thing to freeze up. Have it topped up and it will fix it. I promise.
