Could anyone offer some advice as to why my petrol '96 Discovery V8 ES "stutters" at high speed? Engine seems to cut out or lose power and then recovers. Truck was serviced recently and runs well generally. |

Sounds like it might be the Vehicle Speed Sensor |

Pieter, It usually is the Vehicle Speed Sensor but I had the same problem with mine and it ended up being my starter solenoid? Don't ask me why, I finally died and my car would not start!! Replaced the coil and that fixed the problem. Y |

Had the same problem with my '96 and it was due to the cheaper gas I was using-had a jeep for 10 years and used 87 octane . . .forgot the LR needs at least 92-put in the good stuff and never did it again. |

Quick question I've heard the Idle Air Controler being referd as IAC which makes sense but its IAS the same thing??? And its the Throttle Position Sensor the same as the Stepper Motor?? just wondering. |

No, Tony, the throttle position sensor is on the plenum in line with the butterfly for the throttle. Its purpose is to tell the ECU where the butterfly is. The IAC is located on the very back of the plenum and has no mechanical attachment to any moving parts. The purpose of the IAC is to allow additional air to bypass the butterfly to allow for electronic control of idle speed as engine load changes. The ECU has direct electronic control over fuel delivery through widening the pulses sent to the individual injectors (or banks of injectors as the case may be). The ECU controls air to the engine via the IAC, as the butterfly is fixed by setting the base idle with the IAC ports plugged. While there are many good responses to your question, if the stuttering appears to be vehicl-speed dependent, it is likely to be the VSS. Also, Slade, ICM failures are far less common on Discos due to the location versus the earlier trucks like your Rangie. I think we all know where I'm going with the ICM :-) (I need a flippie here! Better yet, a hippie flippie) I have 173K miles on my Disco and rarely use anything other than the cheap gas. |

Thanks everyone - much appreciated. To answer the "what speed?" question - absolute maximum on a downhill! |

Need some clues. Bought a '94 Disco with 94K. Car was not well maintained. Car was running with some hesitation but was running. Wash engine and looks I got water in the gas. Made a change in a power steering hose, thermostat taking the battery out for safety. Now the car won't start. Checked: 1) pulse in the injectors and is OK. 2) Gas is going to the injectors (plenty)3) Spark plugs making good sparks. 4) Gas do not explode ( it looks no combustion........I need help from the experts to troubleshoot the problem. Is anyone had the same problem before? I am new in the Land Rover team. Please, help |
