I am looking for someone to do some off-roading with. Nothing drastic, something the family will enjoy.

Hello,

I'm in North Pole just outside of Fairbanks.
What did you have in mind? Shoot me an email and let me know.

So where in AK? My wife and I are looking to move to Ak in the next couple of years. She is going to school for a medical degree, and we want to use it in Alaska. So more than likely we will need to be located near anchorage. I hope to live near turnagain bay if thats the case. What's wheeling like up there?

Off roading up here, especially around Fairbanks, is as easy as getting on what they call a paved road. All the roads up here are so uneven from the freeze/thaw cycle that you can really test that new suspension. Otherwise there are all kinds of paths that lead into God know where, so just get on one and see where it goes. My next trip is going to be to see how far up towards the Arctic Ocean I can get. Any takers?

John, are you AF? I work in neurology here in AK. I will be flying up to see patients in Fairbanks in a few weeks. I would be interested in that trip. Shoot me an email.

Andy, the medical field is the way to go up here. There are plenty of jobs with very good pay, and the views are awesome from every window in the house.
There are plenty of places to go wheelin, you want to make sure you go in pairs though.

Man, I can't wait to be able live there. Well someday I can offer to go along on a trip. My wife and I feel in love with Ak when we did a 5.5 week trip there driving from utah last year. My company is looking to start a branch up there (civil engineering) and my wife should be out of school by then (she's getting a doctorate in nursing up from a FNP). How hard is it to get rover parts and service?

Hey Doug. I'm Army. Sure, give me a call and maybe we can line something up for when you get here. Just remember that here in a few weeks the weather up there is going to get rough, so we'll need to plan accordingly.

Andy, get up here as soon as you can. And if your firm is looking for guys with communications experience and a BS in biology, let me know. I'll be here in AK probably until 2006. As for parts and service....you can get both of them....for a price. It's not that you can't order from the guys at discount rovers, rover connection, etc. it's that the shipping will break your back. Here in Fairbanks we have a dealership called Fairbanks Imports. They are a bunch of great people that actually don't seem like a dealership crew.

The neat thing about being up here is that you'll see some unique vehicles that people bring with them from other countries. I've seen unimogs, D110s, and a sweet Land Cruiser 4000 from Germany. It had a snorkel, a diesel, and it looked like a sweet Garmin GPS set up on the dash. I even saw a couple that was driving a 110 around the world at Denali. They have a website at challengingyourdreams.com.

If you know of anybody getting ready to drive to Alaska that would like to swing through Oregon and pick me up a roof rack let me know. I paid over $200 to get my Rovertym bumper up here (worth every penny).

We drove my wifes audi a4 wagon because of the mileage it made to AK, we put 8k miles on the trip. Yea, I saw this D130 that was set up as a camper. A sweet truck, diesel, snorkel, xzl's, the camper looked like they took a 130 pu and converted it. It had english plates on it. I expect the shipping costs, I'll just make sure my rovers set up the way I want it before I move. Then buy lots of spare parts.

John, I had thought about the Artic Ocean trip also. I live in Oregon and try to make it up every summer. I've been to the Kenai peninsula twice and this august Im driving the disco to Prince of Wales Island in the SE. I was under the impression that the Dalton Hwy. does go all the way to the Artic Ocean at Prudhoe Bay. But I guess they dont let you drive all the way to the ocean. Maybe just do some trailblazing to the edge...

Is the Dalton Hwy so rough that it may not be possible to make the trip? Does it get to muddy in the summer with the thaw? I was just wondering. It may be a couple of years till I look to seriously do it. Last time we drove to the Kenai we put over 7K miles on my dads car. It was basiclly 3 1/2 of straigh driving at over 80mph each way. Very, very, very long.

That Artic trip would be cool. And then a quick run to the south of Chile to see the Antartic. How cool would that be and what better car than a rover. I wonder if the boss will give me 2 or 3 months of paid vacation? LOL

I wish I had a boss that would give me 3 months off.

I've heard that you can't drive all the way up, but there is a bus that for a small fee (yeah, right) that will take you all the way to the ocean. I wouldn't mind trailblazing. The road is actually supposed to be pretty decent. You just need to bring a lot of extra gas. Truckers drive it all year in these huge tractor trailers.

I'm all about the trip. I'm no stranger to driving. I did it all the way from Augusta, GA to Fairbanks, AK. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi John,

You must be a SIGO. Correct?

Thats right. I'm a SIGO with the support battalion up here. How'd you guess? I would really like to get a group of rover guys up here. There's a group rolls around here in a bunch of jeeps with these "Arctic Offroad" decals in their windows. It's killing me.

If anybody wants to come up here just let me know. I think we could get some great stuff to show on DWEB.

Your username and the fact that you drove from GA to AK (Gordon I assume).
