I have both. The haynes has pictures which is easier to work with. The genuine is more detailed in many areas. The Haynes has no info on differentials, t-case and transmission.
The haynes has more info on the interior.

Get both.

There's also a big price difference between a Haynes and a genuine LR manual.

Has anyone bought the "Rave" CD. If so, how does it compare the the Haynes and LR manuals?

I have a 96 D1 and I'm wanting to buy a tech manual too. I'd appreciate it if you guys could help me with a couple of questions:

1) Which manual (Haynes or LR) is better for a newbie rover owner and novice (but learning) DIY'er? Or does it matter?
2) I know the Hayues only covers up to the '95 Disco, is there a big difference mechanically between the 95 & 96 (which I have)? So basically will the Haynes still be relevant for a 96?

Thanks for your input!
2)

I think the Haynes manual doesnt cover 4.0 engine.

The Haynes does have some pointers for the 4.0 engine, but it is mainly for the 94-95 model. I have the Haynes manual and found it really easy to use. The only problem is the trouble shooting area is very limited and the book has more on dismantelling the entire engine than day to day problems fixes. Overall thought I think the Haynes is a good tool to have, specially if your an inexperienced mechanic.

The Haynes Manual does not cover the ignition system found on the 96 (96 has no traditional distributor).

Just buy the LR work shop manual. You will be wasting your $ with Haynes. Dont go to the dealer there are places for $70-$100 probably less if you look. I dont recall where I gat mine.

The "Rave" CD is the LR manual in digital format. It's excellent.

I have the genuine and the Haynes. Sometimes one is better than the other. IMHO Hayanes is a helluva lot easier to take with you on a trip...and unlike CD Rom, legible without a computer

FYI - the CD's of the manuals are much cheaper than the printed versions. I got mine off eBay for $40 and it includes all of the official LR manuals (Workshop Manual, Electrical Manual, Body Repair Manual, Paint Manual, Accessory Guide, and Special Tools Guide). Check out http://The-Land-Rover.com - they have manuals you can download in PDF format or you can buy the CD I have there too.
