Just out of curiousity, if you guys or gals wanted another vehicle to toy around with what would you get. Now this would be a used non-rover for under 10K(don't wanna hear 20 italian italian cars costing more than a house). A hobby vehicle, something to work on that isn't posessed by british engineering. Anyone? I might be buying something mid-summer, just curious what others would do. |

Well my 2nd car is a 69MGB.. I know I know.. British engineering but hey what other car can you pull a engine out in less then a hour. Parts are cheap and you can work on them yourself with no problems. You can find a rust free car under $4K (some less- my 70MGBGT was only $700) still in very nice shape. Now they are the same as the Disco when it comes to working on them but they really are no problem. Keep them tuned and you are looking in the high 20's for mpg. Convert the alternator over to a AC Delco unit for less then $50 and no more lucas problems. DonC 96 SE7 |

Hmmm... First vehicle would be a dedicated off-roader. Something like a Unimog, Pinzgauer, or maybe an early Bronco with a 351 and minimal trim Second would be a 2 seater convertible. Maybe a Healey Sprite. I'd prefer the 3000 but you said under $10k. I'd take a basket case DB2 if I could find one. If the convertible couldn't be had, a nice 65-67 Mustang with a big block. -P |

A wrecked Defender 90. I would lift it, cut it, lock it and fit 38s on it. I have always wanted a trailer queen. I know you wanted a non Rover. I restored a 59 Jag MK9 that had vines growing out of it and now it's on the car show circuit with a new owner. It was good for chasing girls and that was about it. Although I must admit I've always wanted an old Cobra. |

Ducati 900 Monster -- the Desmodromic valve train should give those inclined plenty to fiddle with. The "i.e." model for the cost consious or the S4 with the 916 engine for a few $$$ more. That's my plan, but will have to make space in the garage -- I don't think I could ever bring myself to sell the Hawk GT. ---Norm |

My toy cars are: 79 Bronco - Not the small 'classic ones (thru77) these were made for two years, fullsize, yet solid axle. 87 Samurai - Cheap, easy to work on, strong aftermarket support, solid axle. Same wheelbase as the old CJ5s, but narrower. So fun to drive, I alternate daily driver roles with this and the Disco. 72 MG Midget - strong aftermarket support, fun and easy to work on, spends most of its life on jackstands. If you want a project thats doable, fun and good parts availability, get a Spridget. The wife drives the F250 tow rig to support my toys. My next addition is a Miata. Lots of parts support, great mpg, japanese reliability, RWD and inexpensive. If your "3rd" car needs to be a daily driver or similar, I'd think the miata would be great. I second the Vette nomination, a birthyear vette (for me, 1974) is a down the road choice. I'd also suggest a 911, thats my "I just turned 40 and want a new toy" car 13 years from now. |

I know you said non-British, but... a Triumph TR7 with a Rover V8 fitted to replace the standard 4 cylinder "boat anchor" they came with would be my choice. Maybe with a little stroke (to 5.0 litres) a little Haltech engine management, an exhaust and it's gotta be a soft top. Take your pick with auto or manual - I believe that the Toyota Supra box sits in them OK. Put a diff in her too. She may not be a 4WD but it least she's a rear wheel drive!! |

I'd have to say a Disco (since i don't have one yet!) to go along with my '93 300ZX...once the Z passes away definitely a 911. |

The other vehicles leaking on my driveway are; '74 Porsche 914 '82 Porsche 911 Targa '87 BMW 325is Sorry, I didn't mean leak... I meant "marking their spot"! They're all fun to work on and even more fun to drive. David |

If I were looking for a toy car under $10K and reliability was an issue, a Miata. If reliability was not an issue then a Series ROver or an MG, or if you really want to have fun....http://www.championmotorcars.com David |

I was gonna say D90 soft top, but you want non-UK so I would say K5 Blazer, no trim, or '86 Jeep CJ-7. If I had to have a car, not a truck of sorts, I'd go for an old M3 (1986 Alpina)or maybe even a 1986 Scirocco 16v if I could find one in new condition. Ron Ward |

I would have to agree with an old Vette. You would want a chrome bumper car, something from '72 or earlier. The market has been up lately so you would be hard pressed to find something really nice for under $10k, I don't think you will find a mid year in the under $10k price range. If you want a nice driver or project car, you could find a decent '70 or '71 Stingray that would probably suite your taste, they look almost identical to the '69 Stingray except for the side grill and marker lights. Everyone else has been suggesting British cars, so I guess I will too. If you want something not totally British, or if you're a Ford man, a Sunbeam Tiger would be great. Matt |

I've always wanted something like an old Austin Mini Cooper S, or maybe a Shelby Cobra 427 or Shelby GT350. But I've got a restored '68 Cougar GT-E and my old SIIa (now with no engine) sitting in my shop, along with a waiting-for-pieces Rover project, so that's probably enough old cars to easily kill $10K LOL Aside from that, this summer I'll be adding an Arden body and suspension kit (which will probably cost $10K after all's said and done LOL) to my X-Type 3.0, which sits in the driveway next to my wife's bulletproof (or perhaps I should say "speeding bullet") Volvo 850R wagon, so if anything I could probably stand to get rid of a couple cars to make room for the 2nd and 3rd |

Already having a Disco and '73 FJ40, I'll have to go with a sports car. But given your 10K ceiling and the fact that the Disco and 40 already take so much time under them, I'm pressed for an answer. Over 10K, M Coupe. Under 10K, I'll say a Fiat Spyder. My best friend had one in high school and sure it broke on a regular basis, and did not drive all that well as I remember, but damn did we have fun buzzing around ATL. |

A Buell M2 Cyclone or a HD 883 Sportster. I have been eyeing a Ducati Monster M900 and a Motto Guzzi V11 sport but you wanted something for under $10K. I sold my old bike last winter so it would most likely be a motorcycle. Or to be economical - that Golf or Jetta TDi. Or a Swiss Army Unimog. Or a Willys. Or a 77 Bronco or some old muscle car or a quad...who knows. |

(6'-3") and just a nice simple car inside too. the basics, but nice and clean. someday hopefully. my wish list is just too big as it is and my time and $$ are already occupied by my current truck. and i better hurry or some day i will be married and have even less $$ to play with. i don't think these are under $10k - but i'd take a '43 schwimmwagen.... for sure under $10k - 83 wolfsburg scirocco 98 jeep tj 85 audi quattro turbo coupe and as an outside 'project' get a 94-95 disco and cut the top off leaving the door windows and frames. everything else goes. and then fab a custom hoop top like a series..... steveII |

Hey Al, for under 10K, I would go with an early 70's 240Z or an 89-90 BMW e30 M3. I almost sold my spleen and kidney for this one. The owners reserve was only $5500, unfortunately, my wife already claimed the Uncle Sam refund to go to the house instead into my toy funds . Whatever it is you get, have fun with it! -glenn |

Nice Rig Don!! Way cool. What year MG is it? How did you get that webber sidedraft carb to work anyway? I put one on a friends Triumph spitfire and could never get it jetted right. I do worry about people who crome their radiator, you might want to get therapy for that. LOL. Thanks for the pics, that is one BadAss rig. JMcD |

JMcD, Thanks! The rad is not chromed but just polished out from way tooo many smoke breaks in the garage when it was too cold to go outside. The early MG rads (mine is a 69) are all brass underneath so just some time to polish them is all that is needed. There is a weber site that I have bookmarked somewhere that had some suggested weber settings but the best way to zero it in is buy a a group of the jets and do rolling tests. That is what I had to do with mine when I was prepping it to race. A bit of a pain but was fun running it and down the block. I will see if I can find that web page to give u a hand. Thanks again, DonC |

Yeah, I tried to swap jets but could never get it right, it only ran well wide open, probably a vacuum deficiency. Car is long gone now, had a run in with a K-5 Blazer head on. My friend was lucky to live. Nice car, you got an Ansa on that? I'll bet it sounds mean. Polishing your radiator? That might actually be worse than chroming it!! LOL JMcD |

Ouch that must not have been a very pretty sight to see. I am glad that your friend was ok after that. That same reason is pretty much why i stored mine. Here in Austin there are too many people not paying attention to continue driving it every day. At least I still have it but my father is having fun with it now North of Richmond, Va. I placed a 2" Peco exhaust on it after boring the engine out to a 2.0L. Man that thing runs like a bat out of hell. I upgraded to a Lotus designed suspension on it and it is like a go cart. As for polishing the rad.. Have you ever been to western Oklahoma? I was stationed there for a bit and what else would there be to do besides watch the grass grow..=-) Well IF I ever replace the Disco engine with a 4.6 then the 4.0 goes into the MGBGT.. now that just might be fun. |

Hmmmm......... Under 10k, I'll agree with Zinhead, I'd look for an Alfa GTV-variant (but, they're all in California, on the other side of the continent!)... More practical, costs more than 10k but a lot less than a new Italian car..... how about a WRX? -L |
