hey guys a got a bit of a panic level question here. when is the right time to check for the acurate oil level? the owners guide says the engine shoul be hot. it says ti check it 5 mins after you stop it. is this emough time for the oil to drain into the sump? i let it sit like 10 mins and the dipstick is reading that the oil level is too high. am i f**ked? did i over fill it? or should i let it drain into the sump longer? when exactly will i get an acurate reading off of the dipstick? hot / cold? how long after the enigine stops is the right time to check it? |

You can check it either cold or hot. But considering that most auto manufactorers base oil level when it is hot, it's recommended to check it hot. If you prefer to check it cold, take measurements both cold and hot. Compare the difference between the two, and figure in your new full mark. If I check mine hot, I usually do it after I finish fueling up to allow it to settle back in the pan. |

I check it cold and it's just below the full mark, i just checked it hot and its way above the mark. should i drain some out. i haven't driven it very far since i changed the oil. i followed the owenrs manual instructions exactly. i;m a bit worrried about the fact that it reads so high when the engine is hot. i know its a bad thing, a vaery bad thing to have too much oil in it. so what are my options? should i just open the drain plug and drain some out and jam the plug back in? i know it will be messy but i don't waht to f**k my rover up. help |
