I did it, chopped the top! It was a fun project.
If you don't know why I did it, go to http://www.redbirdsra.com/disco.htm to see what inspired the conversion.

Check out http://www.redbirdsra.com/discoconv.htm
to see the photos of the removal we did today.

Now what should I do to it next.........

By the way, my fuel pump doesn't work now. There is no power going to fuse 6 or 7 (engine compartment fuse box) which are the fuses that control the pump and fuel system. Of course, I probably did something to a wire when I took off the roof. Any advice on what I could have done is greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to going for a nice drive under the stars!

I also have some parts available. I have posted the items in the classifieds.

B.K.

IMHO you should have left the winshield.... obviously the next step is to build a cage and hope you can re-fit some sort of windshield without it looking to out of place (branches slapping you face while off-road are never fun :-))

The windshield frame was trashed. I gave saving it a bunch of thought but said screw it.

I wonder if it would be possible to rig some sort of hinged windscreen to your project. Something to block those pesky branches, yet afford you the opprotunity to catch a few bugs in the teeth.

Be easy to install a Safety Devices roll cage now and perhaps a large piece of perspex as a windsheild

I like it. Throw a Kegerator in the back and drive around different beaches providing beverage to the thonged masses. :-)

As far as you fuel pump, how about just running a hot wire off of a toggle switch to the fuel pump. If nothing else this will prevent any joy riders from driving off with it if they don't know where the switch is.

cool beans! just so i could add a bit for you to muse over, i would weld the rear doors shut and really consider salvaging a new front windscreen frame and go back to the OEM style. get someone to make you some canvas bows and a top and you would have a modern 109, sorta. a good body guy could put the body right to make it driveable.

imho

When I shut the doors now, the whole side rattles! There definately needs to be some re-inforcement there. I do wish I could have saved the windshield frame, but I may cut up the remaining pieces and see if I can put it back together. Then again, probably not...

I like the hot wire to the fuel pump. Since the other fuse (fuel system) isn't getting power, I wonder if that will solve the problem.

Don't forget to put either a fuse or a breaker on the hot wire to the pump. I would hate for you to have other issue like a nasty fire...I don't think the insurance company will pay again.

yeah I see it now, before I was just looking at the small pics and it looked okay. When I blow it up now I can see cracks in the windshield so maybe it did get trashed...

If you did it right a hinged windshiled could look okay (I wonder if a series one would line up). Definitly get to building the cage, a SD one would be cool but seems like a lot of change to drop on a wrecked disco with the roof cut off :-).

This is a cool project, I wonder if one has ever been done before?? I know we have all seen the pics of that one that has been bob-tailed and turned into a pick-up but I've never seen a full chop-job.

BRAVO! That is great.

Now fab a fold-down windshield, and grab a Safety Devices "internal" full roll cage and a Safety Devices full rack that bolts "through the roof" to the roll cage and you're in business. Very cool.

What would you consider selling it for as is? Any other issues besides a few crumpled body panels?

The SD full cage would be really nice. You could have a shop fab up some returns from a new factory windshield / pillar to the SD cage. Should take some of the rattle out of the side of the truck when you close the doors.

I'm also curious as to whether all the bolts that hold the door pillars might have been knocked loose when you landed on your side?

I really like the way it looks less the top - very aggressive.

Good luck on your project, keep sending us links!

Cheers,

e

If it's not the inertia switch, then ... Isn't the remote DL receiver in the roof? If so, I guess by disconnecting, your immobilizer would be on, hence no fuel pump. But then again, your alarm would go off, no? Anyway, just shooting in the dark.

I too would have left the windshield but if it couldn't be hleped, put a Lexan one on later, once the cage is on.

Carter,
The 03 RR would be cool all cut up. Then you would have the special air-box that senses water and seals itself for 15 seconds so you could drive under water.
LOL

do you think the 03 rangie's self sealing air-box could be connected to a self activating soft top that would automatically deploy in the rain?

Don't forget to reinforce the frame. The roof and pillars on a hard-top vehicle do alot to prevent frame buckling and twisting. All convertables have beefier frames to account for this.

Should be sweet when you're done....
