Can anyone make a spare key for a Disco 2? I'm not talking about a key with a remote, just a standard key. When we bought ours it only had one key and it has the remote on it. Just wondered if my local Lowe's or someplace can make a copy with that remote on there. TIA.

I had a key made at a Walmart for my 96 disco once. It was just a metal blank with out black plastic on it. It was a hassel cause they had to order the blank from their supplier. But from start to finish I had a key in about three days.

Take it to the dealer, and give them your vin will make a big difference. Trust me, not expensive.

some places will not cut rover keys. they are steal and some shops will only cut brass. wal-mart did it for me. but only 50% of the keys worked that they ever cut.

I had three keys cut this weekend. I went to Home Depot and they said that they couldn't copy them (they thought there might be a chip inside). So I found the nearest locksmith and they copied them with no problem. This was for my 99 Disco 2.

After my experience with the locksmith I'd say that if they carried the blank keys that match your key let anyone copy it and save yourself a trip to the dealer. I had no problems with any of the keys that were made and would assume if I talked the home depot guys into copying it, those would have worked as well.

It's only $12 or so to get a key from the dealer & they'll make sure it actually works!

I have tried to get my key coppied at Lows, Home depot, and manards and they all try to tell me I have a GM car or Ford. They seem to think Land Rover is Japanesse or that it is like a Lincoln. So just go to the dealer they will do it well, and if not they will give you your money back if it doesn't work like in my case.

Yeah, Chris. Everyone is pretty much an idiot. I can't tell you HOW many insurance agents I've talked to when trying to verify insurance for a customer that refuse to understand that a Land Rover is NOT a Toyota. Even if I tell them 10 times it is a LAND ROVER, they still come back and say, "Gee, MELISSA, (or Alica, or Alison, or Alice) that's not a valid VIN." Or, they argue that it isn't in their computer system (because they are looking in the wrong place). These people deal with cars on a DAILY BASIS & they still can't get it right!

the new key machines are made so you need to have the correct make of car and then you slide it into a special slot. if you goto the old school type place they can usually copy it no problem.

alyssa, i went to my dealer for keys and they sold me blanks and told me to goto the hardware store up the road. can i tell you my vin and sell me new ones? my main key is bent and i am getting worried. half the keys the hardware store cut dont work because my master key is subpar.

I bought my keys from ebay - two keys for $15.00. The dealer here in Charleston wanted $35.00 per key to cut them. I laughed pretty hard and thought he was joking. He was not! I took the keys to a local locksmith and he cit them for #3.00 plus tax. - Beware

Hey now Alyssa, I'm an insurance agent and I have yet to tell someone that they're rover is a toyota. Lets not generalize about all insurance agents, there are good ones out there, me for example. Dont forget that there are many Land Rover salesman who seem to know nothing about Rovers even though they deal with them every day. And then there are land rover mechanics......LOL

I didn't say ALL insurance agents. I'm in such a large metro area that I rarely encounter the same agents over and over again. I get a pretty good sampling of the agents out there, and I have encountered a large number who haven't got a clue what a Land Rover is. It's just something that bothers me, especially when I keep saying, "NO, it's NOT a Toyota. The BRAND is Land Rover. The MODEL is Discovery." ...and they STILL get it wrong.
...and Land Rover Salespeople who don't know what they are doing drive me nuts! They give those of us who care a bad rap!
...sorry, having a bit of a bitchy day.

I'm with Alyssa on this.
I go into a parts supply house and say, "I need spark plugs for a Land Rover Discovery".
The answer I usally get back is, "Land Rover, HUH?, Who makes that?"
Which I have to reply "Ah, Land Rover".
To which I get,"You sure it's not a Toyota?"
So usally by this time I have to take them to the parking lot and point to the puddle of oil that my truck is leaking on thier parking lot. Then they say, "Yep, that's not a Toyota".
These people deal in car parts for a living and still want to know "who makes Land Rover?"
