I have read somewhere on discoweb before the problem with the idler pulley on D2's. Well, if you haven't replaced it yet, I would carry a spare or replace with a metal one. I have 98,000 miles on my 2001 D2 and was on the way to the mountains for some kayaking this weekend when the serpentine belt exploded. after waiting for two hours for a tow truck(Highway patrol gave bad info as to where I was broken down and alltel road side assistance hires only dumbasses) the tow truck got stuck(roll back type) in the ditch on the side of the interstate. so I pulled the rover around front and pulled the wrecker out of the ditch.(I'd like to see a lexus or toyota do that) well, to make a long story short, the idler puller had chipped in two places and shredded the serpentine belt. the mechanic with the towing company found a napa part that worked and a six groove belt instead of seven to get me up and running. unfortunately, I realized once a got home the tow truck driver when securing the truck on the wrecker tore off my rear axle breather and smashed it bad in the spot where it comes out of the axle. If anyone could tell me how hard it is to replace this vent/breather and where I can get a better idler pulley I would appreciate it. I would suggest to everyone atleast carrying this spare part with you as the pulley on these things wouldn't even make decent legos.

typically they will make a good amount of noise before they 'go'. and it usually takes some time before the bearings sieze. but your case sounds different from the others i have heard/seen. they sound like a water pump going bad.
just replaced one this past weekend on a D2. knew it was the tensioner and left it for a while.

Mine was just replaced. It was a loud whore! But now, it's all quiet.

I don't even have the correct replacement parts. Its a napa pulley thats slightly bigger with no lip but is super quiet now. Mine old one was always loud and didn't get any louder before it broke. the bearings didn't sieze, the pulley itself broke because its cheap plastic I guess. the wrecker driver was dumbfounded that I pulled him out of the ditch. that was pretty funny.

There are two pulleys, one there was a recall and all of them should now have a new metal pulley if you have been to a dealer in the last two years, the other has just been updated to a metal one, the part is pqr500060, and has an MSRP of under $25.
