Today I lifted my Disco II 2" with OME springs and shocks. Rear only the shocks were changed as I want to keep the SLS air system. Instead, temporarily, the SLS was fooled to the correct heigh by manipulating the sensor. Now, my question: Has anyone in the forum experienced too put a spacer underneath the air spring to reduce the air pressure back to normal? I would like too make a pair in advance and just install them without messing around.

I too just installed the OME lift and added a bracket to fool the sensor. The ride feels good and the heights of the front and rear look appropriate. Any concerns about the airbags with this set up? Will this cause too much strain on the bags without the spacers (especially if the SLS is activated and the rear end lifted)? Thanks.

Have a look at www.disco2.com. I asked the same in their forum and there is one interesting answer to the question about stressing the air springs.
My Disco also feels very good after the lift. It is firmer and swallows obstacles much better.

Be careful with this setup. I too had mine fitted this way. During an off-road excursion at Uwharrie, I blew one of the bags and had to limp back to camp with the left rear of my truck on the bump stop and the fender eating my newly installed MTR alive. Did a conversion to coils and haven't looked back. I can't recommend keeping the SLS if you're going to do any kind of serious off-rovering.

Now I am waiting for a kit of spacers to install under the air springs to reduce the pressure back to normal again. Anyway, also with these spacers, I have been recommended not to lift the rear with SLS to offroad height as the brake tubes and ABS arrangement need a mod.

Question!! I am new to the Rover scene and bought an OME 2" lift for my Disco II but have yet to install it. Regarding the SLS, what needs to be done in order to install the lift? If I don't plan to do any serious off-roading soon, is it safe to leave the SLS in stock form? Or do I have to modify the SLS in order to install the lift kit? Please dumb down all your answers as I am not a technical genius and no little about Rovers

Einar,

I have a 2000 DII with ACE and SLS (you can see it in the gallery). I've lifted it using the the SLS spacers in the rear and have had no problems as of yet. I did find that the stock shocks topped out badly once I installed the spacers, so I had to change those. I've also changed to extended brake lines as the stock lines were seeing full extension even when pulled out of the their brackets. I was also cautioned about boosting the rear end with the off road height button.

Luke,

If you bought a lift for your SLS equipped truck, then you should only have the front springs (unless its a coil spring conversion kit), because the rear springs are airbags that change pressure to accommodate different loads, ultimately resulting in a "leveled" vehicle. For the rear, you would eventually want the spacers for those airbags, so that you would be running closer to a stock pressure setting, as opposed to compensating for the lift by running the airbag higher. The spacer just sits between the airbag and the lower seat at the axle.

Devin,
Thanks for the tip! Now will the rear end adjust itself automatically, or are there any mods that I will need to make? Also, how difficult is it to adjust to coil springs as I think I bought a comprehensive kit including springs for the rear?

Luke,

You'll need to "trick" the leveling sensor if you install the front springs and keep the airbags in the rear. Expedition Exchange has a good tech page on performing this modification including installation of the front springs. Go here to check it out: http://expeditionexchange.com/disco2frontcoils/ .

I can't answer the conversion question, as I have no experience with it.

As I would prefer not to "fab" a sensor trick kit, does anyone make something like this? I am going out of town and having the lift kit and tires installed at the same time while I am gone. I am attempting to give my mechanic less ammunition for bending me over the bumper on installation prices. If this kit is that easy, I guess I should be able to make something up myself. Any ideas on plastic vs. aluminum?

Plastic? Pobably okay if you drive to the mall and back. Go to homedepot/lowes get a piece of flat steel bar for $5, use a hacksaw to cut to length, drill holes, get some nuts and bolts, total time 30 min.

Luke,
I have the same set up (Dll, OME HD in front, SLS with spacers in back). I have used the SLS to raise the rear for off roading repeatedly, without problems. Thats my $0.02.

From DiscoParts, UK I´ve got a quick and perfect delivery of spacers for the rear airsprings which were installed today. Now I feel confident to drive my Disco both on and off road. The rear behaves softer now with the spacers. Probably because the air spring pressure is back to normal. Tomorow we start a long trip around Europe. Thanks for good advices.
